There are nice places in England, for sure, I know several spots I'd love to live in, but affording to live there and finding work is impossible for most.

Nah. It's pretty good actually. Anyone trying to convince themselves otherwise is a miserable bd who would complain wherever they go.

Apart from short days in winter. That's just wrong and horrible.

I don't live in the U.K. i have spent far too much time in Salford. But there are so many great areas.
Britain is a dump nowadays , you only have to read the posts on here regards break ins , travellers , car thefts , speed cameras ,PC brigade finally winning ,dominating the stairs etc .Try reading the online news and be ready with a razor blade , then there's Brexit to boot . British people have been mullered with so much crap for so long that it's now been accepted as part of life , it shouldn't be like that , there is a free world out there .
We were fortunate , lived in the South-West and still have family in Sussex and Kent ,nicer areas compared to Bradford but still the younger family members are upping roots and bailing to pastures new , New Zealand Australia and Canada seem the choice , can't say I blame them either .

Sorry but that is just a massive load of crap.

I'm in Australia. We get the same crime reporting. There's just been a serial child rapist caught 40 minutes from me. If I do 90mph on our motorways I lose my licence for 3 months. Etc etc etc.

If you only focus on the negative then you will only experience the negative.

Oh well, cheerio then.

I don't think anyone suggested that Britain was absolutely perfect across very possible mile - nor is any other country. If you want to focus on Bradford (or similar) areas then I'm sure most of us would agree that there are places we'd avoid. Surely, the whole point is what the total package amounts to ?
Personally, I can't see the problem with the likes of speed cameras, Brexit etc but if it causes you such grief then I agree that you'd be better trying out that greener grass elsewhere.

Where else have you lived? I travel all of the time for work and have lived in Germany for three years; on average the UK is the nicest place to live in the world, every country has negatives and you'd be naive or stupid to think Aus / NZ / Canada don't have the same problems.

Yeah the UK has its issues, but for me it is still the nicest place to live.

People only report bad news. Newspapers only report bad news. Good news doesn't sell newspapers.

The better communications and media have become the more we hear of this bad news.

Every country I have spent much time in has the same issue: nobody wants to hear about the happy people who live comfortable lives, they just want to hear all about the rape, murder or pillage.

This is true - no one mentions that Syria is bathed in all year round sunshine do they?
News is naturally about stuff that could affect the happy norm.
Everyone has switched off by the time the 'and finally' story comes round.

I had to laugh not long after we moved to Christchurch there was a radio report/warning of a burgler at large somewhere over the other side of the city.

Where I moved from murders went unreported...

Just so you know NZ has the same homicide rate as the UK at ~1/100,000

Burglaries are a difficult one because different countries record their stats differently but a quick bit of research has NZ at ~74,000 with a population of 4.7m and the England and Wales at ~750,000 popn 56m giving us a slightly lower rate, over time probably broadly similar.

People think criminals get treated lightly in the UK, that the judges let everybody off all the time, but we actually have the highest prison population per capita in Europe.

We are still way, way behind the USA and Russia though.

Britain's crime has declined by half since the 1990s and it is one of the safest "big countries" to live in on Earth. The police remain almost completely unarmed. And UK has just about the safest roads for driving in the entire world.

Where Britain does struggle, is: weather and the economy.

UK is cloudy, grey or rainy for 50-90% of the year. The weather makes a lot of people negative, even if they don't realise it.

UK is quite a poor country outside south east England (where only 10-20% live). Some parts of the UK, like Wales, have third-world living standards. The post-agricultural, post-industrial economy makes a lot of people negative, even if they don't realise it.

You don't half talk some rubbish, I lived in Wales my whole life (25 years) before moving away and have never witnessed these '3rd' world living standards, I have also spent a lot of time in the US, where they defiantly do live like a 3rd world country.

It's incredibly difficult to be '3rd' world in the Uk as we have such accessible benefits / support.

UK to live in, plenty of great places in Wales, Scotland, England & NI to visit, plus the rest of the world to visit so easily! I have visited about 80 countries and no matter how good a time I have abroad, coming home is a highlight biggrin

Having lived in the third world for much of the last 25 years, all I can say to your comment is laughlaughlaugh

Having a mere 32" flat screen, and only two cars, does NOT mean you are third world.

Technically Switzerland was (is) a Third World country. Though since the end of the Cold War the term has been largely used incorrectly. It has nothing to do with quality of life or GDP, merely that a country was neither aligned with NATO/'The West' (First World), or USSR/Warpac (Second World)

[/pedant mode]

Though I'd wager anyone drawing parallels with anywhere in the UK and poor, developing countries has spent no time in poor, developing countries.

I thought the same. Wales! Yes it doesn't have many Michelin star restaurants but third world?

Seriously.
