Thailand for me ... perfect balance of weather, cost, value and people
I would say Thailand, too, but I think the weather can be too extreme, transport infrastructure is not great, and the government is unstable. Maybe in another 10-15 years.

And their filtration system removes 80% of human waste!

However, Turkmenistan has cleaner prostitutes so would have to get my vote

I've been all over Germany and it's a wonderful country. I'll be back in Berlin in October and Luebeck and Hamburg in November. The Netherlands on the other hand is my least favourite place to visit. I'm there every year and don't think I've ever been where it wasn't wet, grey and dull (and I'm from the UK!) The people are more direct and the the I'm yet to find a decent hotel. Rotterdam is OK.
I'll be in Hamburg in November too! Likewise can't get enough of Germany. Have Enjoyed working in Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Luebeck, great summers in Baden Baden...

I've been fortunate enough to visit many places;

USA - both east and west coast and central and red-neck country. NYC, Yosemite are the standouts.
Europe - Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Italy
South Africa
Montenegro and Croatia
Hong Kong
Caribbean
Australia

To be honest there are bits and pieces I like about all of them. I could make a go of living in any of them. In the UK I particularly like Cornwall. If I went to the US I think west coast would be my first stop. The Caribbean looks like a swell place to live. Would have to figure out how to get paid for being a beach bum though!

I think I am one of those people who is generally agnostic to the place I live, I don't feel any particular attachment to a place.... I could live just about anywhere (within reason, I am not about to move to a mud hut in the middle of Namibia).

Grass is always greener... but it still needs mowing. You are what makes the place the best for you.

Leicestershire isn't the first stop on the Uk best places to live list though is it? Why not move somewhere else, the UK has lots of nicer places on offer?
How can you say Germany, I have lived here for years now and it doesn't have anything "nailed", it is lumbering, bureaucratic, overly taxed, ridiculous rules / regulations, expensive, the language is awful and the "famed" public transport system is always late, unreliable and more expensive than the UK.

I really don't get the fuss about Germany, what do they have nailed?

I miss the UK and will return soon, the USA (recently turned down a job there), having visited many states on numerous occasions, I wouldn't want to live there, hate Spain, enjoy France, love Asia (if I don't have kids I would live in K.L.).

Scotland, even as an 'English bd', Corsica 2nd choice.

I know they're not countries but both have strong 'national' characters that set them slightly apart from the main country they're in.

Tough one, the US I love the pacific North West, bits of the East Coast are nice and bits not so much, never spent much time in the middle.

For Europe Netherlands is easy but a little boring (been here 15 years), Germany is OK but can be bureaucratic, parts of Italy are amazing and parts not so much.
My left field choice would be Luxembourg, amenities are done with a German level of efficiency, food is on par with France or Italy and they seem to constantly have an excuse to have a drink or celebrate something, it is expensive though.

I've travelled a fair bit (not as much as some here) and the only place I've been to and thought 'I could live here' is Malta (though I haven't been in the height of summer so that might change my opinion).

Someone who used to go my gym went there every year for his holidays, emigrated there and never came back. I went there on his recommendation and fell for it too. It's a wonderful place.

However, like a lot here, when all is said and done I love living in the UK. Despite how much I moan about certain things I know I would really miss it if I left. I live in a part of the UK I really love (Devon) and am very happy here.

TBH I am not well traveled, perhaps 10 countries at the most (I know it is sad!). However Abu Dhabi/Dubai are firm favorites.

I'm not from there but lived there a couple of times and I just felt really comfortable there. I love the UK, especially Scotland and Wales and I love the Netherlands but Germany feels like home and I miss it. Conversely I just don't fit in France, French people are weird.
I work with a lot of Germans and travel there quite a bit.

I thoroughly feel comfortable there too. It's where I'd move to.

Norway?

A few years ago, I asked a young lad: "Does it always rain here in Bergen?

He said "I don't know, I'm only fourteen". frown

Not sure, I've travelled much of the world, often staying for a long periods of time so got to see the good but also the bad sides and know that the grass is not always greener.

Due to Family (kids) I'll probably stay here in the UK but one thing for sure (especially the older I get), if I do move it won't be to anywhere colder...
