What-ho Dibble, that's certainly put my stubbed toe into perspective.
Glad you've made it back home ok, sorry you're in pain. I suppose you just have to keep thinking 'one day, this'll all be over...'
Have to say I find the device (is there a proper name for it?) fascinating. How long will the winding process go on for?

A stubbed toe can be more than painful enough!Glad you've made it back home ok, sorry you're in pain. I suppose you just have to keep thinking 'one day, this'll all be over...'

The device is just referred to as an external fixator. It’s different to an Ilizarov (halo) frame as it’s generally fitted and adjusted in only one plane/direction. The bone break on Tuesday was known as an osteotomy.
I’ll try and get some better photos of the fixator. It’s in a slightly tricky location to take s decent picture of on my own!

Good God. Well to be honest my initial reaction was fking hellfire. Your leg is going to be stretched 9cm? That's astonishing.
Thanks for the info on the devices, as I say I find the whole business fascinating.
I'm dropping a bit now so I'll bid you goodnight old chap, no doubt we'll catch up amid the chaos and anarchy tomorrow.

Morning chaps only just got up and caught up with last night's chat, as an engineer I understand the whole workings of "the fixator" as a wimpy scardy cat bloke it makes me feel a little nauseous!!!!! Huge kudos to you Dibble for sharing, you do realise though that we will try to come up with other more lunatic ideas as to what use it could be put to!!!!
For a start do you reckon we could use it to jack Dibble up to sort out the whole bloomer/flagpole debacle???

Morning Bobbers.
It's dry and there's a good breeze blowing, I reckon we should try burning them later.

I suppose we could, but at the rate of 1mm/day by the time he got to the top the bloomers would have rotted away anyway. It's dry and there's a good breeze blowing, I reckon we should try burning them later.

Not quite - the difference in leg length is only about 5mm. The 9cm of bone that was removed was initially replaced with some cement, which has now been removed and there is a gap where the bone/cement was taken out. Thanks for the info on the devices, as I say I find the whole business fascinating.

The bottom and top of my femur are attached (to the knee and hips and the middle bit moves down, closing the gap at the knee end. New bone grows in the break at the hip end, so eventually the femur will be back to normal length with no gap at the knee end.

I visited the SAAB museum in Trollhattan (Sweden) a few years back. Some nice metal in there, especially the older stuff.

Right, I've got it now. I gathered there was 9cm of bone missing but I'd been trying to work out exactly what was going on.The bottom and top of my femur are attached (to the knee and hips and the middle bit moves down, closing the gap at the knee end. I had drawn several sketches but they're completely wrong so I'll pop them in the bin.
Thanks for explaining that Dibble, hope you have a good day today. I'm going to pick Grandbomma up shortly, she's coming up to Northumberland with us for a few days.
See if I can manage that without getting into some sort of bother.
My road trip thread is going well, need to pause ,still haven't got any proper food in the house.
Asda is beckoning me.
Nom !
I had a word with the German owner of this about the illegal use of the word Nom on his plate.
I persuaded him to cough up a 100E fine and he promised to re register when he got home.
