Funny world we live in, where we think it's acceptable behaviour to assume the state will produce mana from heaven, for no effort.
Indeed - but voicing such a view - or using quite a well worded meme (see above) evidently puts you on a par with Hitler according to Mr Konark. Dog Star said:

the days of me and my ilk knocking a pair of semis together to accommodate such families are long gone.
Indeed my response to the 34 yr old unemployed mother of 5, wanting a 5 bed house today was:
since we've evicted you for not paying the rent and you owe £4500: basically do one.
anyone fancy wandering into an estate agent and demanding a 5 bed house, wherever you prefer to live and expect to be given it for free, immediately ?
nope thought not, as you're not moron's.

Also, what happens to the rent arrears? Is that now written off or does the council pursue it?

I honestly don't know how you do your job. These people and their lack of personal responsibility make my st itch. I'd be arrested for several serious offences in a matter of days...Indeed my response to the 34 yr old unemployed mother of 5, wanting a 5 bed house today was:

The wife had a programme on last night: "Rich House Poor House". It involved a single mother from a council house swapping houses and budgets with a family in the top 10%. Interestingly, the wife of the rich family had grown up in the same council estate.
Now, there were lots of things that would have got into this thread. The poor family had three kids, no obvious father and partook in fried chicken takeaway suppers. The rich family had the white Range Rover and huge TV of council made good.
But actually it had refreshingly zero council attitude. Both families placed huge importance on education, hard work and self reliance. Nice to see.

However I might be a bit flippant- I'm very careful to ensure the needs of children are met and no one is left vulnerable.
basically even if evicted- the council will still house them into a home (in this case another 3 bed flat) where they remain till housed again by another association or perhaps into a managed private rent property.
the law/society/state will always pick up and help idiots, because of the children/vulnerability.
So for families, you are teflon coated.
which is rubbish, but then again I don't want to see little Jaxon, Shaniqua, Fallon Rose suffer because mum and dad (ok mum and fly by night dad (s) are idiots.
bit like dealing with sex offenders. do you house them and then know where they are, fully monitored, or let them float around in the private rented sector ?
Or burn and torture them ?
tough decisions. And today, the world is worrying about some MP possibly touching some woman's leg and sending a text. How do we think men and women have been making contact for the last 100,000 years.

But cahncil and all that warrants it in this instance
"A mother of two beat up an air hostess and vowed to 'rip her ****ing head off' after downing almost an entire bottle of gin on a Thomas Cook flight to Egypt.
Charity worker Bernadette Briggs, 39, was described as going 'completely crazy' after secretly bingeing on gin.
As the plane packed with holidaymakers was due to start its descent from 30,000 feet, Briggs, from St Helens, Merseyside, suddenly stood up from her seat and began swearing and shouting.
When air stewardess Madison Preece asked her to sit down, a swaying and slurring Briggs retorted: 'f**k off' and when told she was putting other passengers at risk she added: 'I'll rip your f*****g head off'.
I'm guessing Ms Preece had no standard photos to offer up for the article http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5043491/Mo...

+1. Nobody minds contributing into a society that provisions for those worse off on the basic understanding they may also require that support also one day. The problem lies when people whom really do not require that care or support abuse a system out of being pure selfish and self absorbent. Everybody who works and contributes through taxation understands the basic concept of a fair welfare system and what they expect from it but people are sick of seeing it abused by those whom should be contributing fairly but don't contribute anything with full and unreasonable expectations and then the whole lot is managed by weak feckless politicians who put there own self preservation above solving any of the serious issues that future generations are going to suffer badly from.
I would say it's fairly council not to know how to use 'whom' instead of 'who'. Extra council just to guess and get it wrong.Edited by M3333 on Wednesday 1st November 21:26
Went to a firework event at a school this evening, and one of the neighbouring houses was holding it's own event the same day.
So on the one hand you had a million quid worth of professional rapid fire artillery going off, and then every few minutes you had a man in the garden lighting his manually. The best thing was he was still at it as everyone at the school left so gave people something to look at whilst queuing for the exit.
Why on earth didn't he hold his event the next day.

well the debt is owed to use- we're a housing association. we'll vaguely pursue it, then write it off. IF she really wants a home again we'll set up a payment plan- you know £2.00 a week !!

Re the evicted family - I guessed it would be something like that. A friend of mine used to manage property for Brighton council a few years ago and used to tell me some horrendous stories.
I live in a country with no assistance if you are out of work. People rely on family or doing whatever work that can find. I find it interesting though that the barriers to work here are much less, due in part to the tax system.
I could set up a small business here without much hassle -clothes, little restaurant etc. No worries about whether it would effect my tax credits, no tax or NI to worry about either. Make enough cash to live day to day, which is what a lot of people do.
Also, there is a minimum wage which is enough to live on for most people (outside of Jakarta). You can rent a Kost (which is a studio flat type thing) like most people do, have food, a phone, rent or buy a scooter and have a bit left over each month. No need for a top up system with all it’s staffing, systems and infrastructure - if you work for a company you get paid enough to live on. Of course if you get in rent arrears or similar - that’s your own look out and it’ll be up to family to bail you out!
Of course lack of tax going in to the system does mean no free healthcare (although that’s changing) and, I think, that schooling after a certain age you have to pay for. So not perfect by any means.
