I'd never heard of Toby Carvery til one popped us near us at Hillington a few years ago. Went once, realised it was awful, never went back.

Seems others feel the same way, as we drove past at the weekend to get to Costa (rip off, but another story, wasn't for me) and noticed it's been shut down and is being turned into something else.
May I put forward a flat-roofed pub or a Wetherspoons?

Don't worry, they have a solution for that. All the Harvesters around our way have been turned into Miller and Carter
hehe

I did chuckle recently on seeing an acquaintance on FB looking forward to their "Posh meal out" I was expecting maybe not Michelin stars but certainly something above the "Miller and Carter" selfie that was provided

I think the innate beauty of the carvery is you don't have to pick through a menu that some might find tricky.

What's a goujon again?

All you need is a little hint of what is being served and where:

I agree, you know what you're going in for. A carvery does one thing and should do it well.

A carvery need not be council (it's just that a chain like Toby Carvery is). I've been to a few carveries where they're anything but council, linen on the table, clean carpets, hard wood tables and above all else, good food... Last one I went to cost £35 a head not including drinks, not expensive, but pricey enough that it weeded out the more council clientele.

Flat roofed pub, yes, but 'Spoons isn't always council.
For the last couple of months I've been having my lunch in the Matthew Broderick in Minnelleum Square in Leeds. It is by and large a more pleasant pub than most, not seen any drunk tramp types in it, nice inside, very nice staff and daft cheap lunch and a pint (or two).

No they were "dressed up" meaning he wasn't wearing a tracky and trainers

Seriously? I'm not saying the place is terrible, it's certainly a cut above the (now sadly demolished I hear?) Stick or Twist, but is it really more pleasant than most pubs you have been in? It's a typical soulless spoons inside and serving cheap but at best ok food. Far, far better places nearby.

I'm going to disagree. Cheap is not necessarily council, I would argue that sometimes it's almost the opposite, crap restaurants marketing themselves as something else to attract "aspirational chav", somewhere Stevo can take Trace to make her feel like a princess in the hope of going home and trying for kid number 6.

Toby Carvery is cheap and honest, isn't doesn't pretend or market itself to be anything else. Maybe it's just "Council and Proud" biggrin

I agree 100% with that and didn't mean to insinuate that anything reasonably priced is council. OTOH, being expensive is no guarantee of not being council otherwise Cheshire and onyx coffee tables wouldn't exist.

Council is more of an attitude. Its a lack of class and lack of shame about it. This isn't something that fits neatly into an economic class.

Although I think you're dead on with this. Usually very easy to spot though. I think brands like "Beats" are case in point. Expensive and the sole selling point of them is to show others you have the brand.

The "aspirational chav" is the perennial example that money cant buy class.

Well you couldn't have bought them for the audio quality or price... So I have to ask why did you buy them?

I've actually got them on just now, at work. Not sure having a job is all that council.
Oi. Stop typing on the internet; there's a queue of cars want their burger suppers out of that little window to your left hehe

Further more, if I'm travelling for business (which I've had to do quite a bit in the past) then someone else is paying for it... So you're damn well right I'm going to a nice sit down restaurant to have a table service meal billed to the client. If the client will not meet such basic requirements, then good luck finding someone with my level of skill who'll do the same job.

In fact all my previous jobs have stipulated I'm not permitted to work more than 8 hours when working away from home as the "reasonable overtime" in most professional contracts clause goes right out the window and some hideously expensive overtime comes into it. I also got paid for flight time, regardless of if it was in or out of business hours, once again, see the part about the client above.

If you find you're pressed for time when working away... it's either poor planning or you need a better career.

I was in Doncaster recently.

It was very nice.

Our hosts must have been showing us all the wrong places.
Some of the rural areas around Donny are as nice as anywhere, but the area around the racecourse and hospital did not seem very genetically diverse. But food is evidently not in short supply

Who doesn't like a breakfast buffet ?!! we stayed in a lovely 5 star hotel in Spain this year (am I council ?) and it had a fantastic restaurant. we loved the breakfast buffet. Who doesn't like having at least 7 different breakfasts and 12 coffee's by 10.00 am on holiday ?

bloody weirdo's.

mountain biking holiday- I'm there- I love cycling. Or walking, caving, mountain climbing, skiing, sailing, kayaking and so on. What a great weekend/week away. even better with a breakfast buffet. Mmmmmmmm
The Bellagio does a fantastic Breakfast Buffet, it can be council or made super Uber council with the addition of the unlimited drinks package, not coffee and tea, Champagne, beer, Buck’s Fizz, Screwdrivers, Bloody Mary’s etc

What can go wrong? Blackjack can go wrong.

I bought them for both.

As well as the convenience of them, bluetooth ear buds. Got them in December in BestBuy, they were on sale.

Compared to everything else I tried out at the time, for the price they were, nothing was better.

Wait. No, I bought them to listen to Lamb of God and Black Label Society because I'm a massive chav.
OMG so edgy.
