The windy winter and occasional snow thread 2017/2018
Discussion
I saw that on the Metcheck forecast, we all know nothing much will happen, half an inch of wet sleet for Cheshire is all we see these days, appreciate other areas get battered, funny how its always a promise that comes to nothing, prefer it to be getting hammered with snow and absolutely no warning.
Remember when I was a kid waking up and being completely surprised that t had snowed, it sounds different and even through the curtains you know due to the meagre light being reflected, would be confirmed by my dad going to work and the sound of a MK1 Capri struggling to get moving, and to be fair, him titting about
Now its GFS charts and debate, I want a good 20 cm of snow, unannounced, no work and to be 11 again, playing out in it for hours despite inadequate woolly gloves, hours of sliding round on our bikes, watching the junction as cars slid into each other, playing on frozen ponds, rolling massive snowballs and snowball fights with other kids that turned into full on punch ups, happy days !

Is Edinburgh snow free from Wednesday-Sunday next week (week starting 15th I think )
Really difficult to tell at this range, as always with the UK, if it's within 24-48 hours then we can start predicting it with any accuracy. The weather next week will be coming in from the NW, from a pool of very cold air which is moving from N America. This type direction doesn't normally cause too many problems on the East Coast. BUT - it's colder than usual, and pretty unstable. Could be some surprises.
Certainly, at this point, everyone needs to be aware that disruption may occur on any day next week Tue-Fri. Don't start changing plans yet, but have some thought about backup options in case it turns white.
To put some meat on the bones.
General agreement on the models that the high pressure bringing this dull murky crud will shift east and allow some Atlantic weather in. The jet stream will come at us from the NW, but sink south of the UK. This allows an Atlantic trough to dominate next week's weather, but not from the SW like normal. A pool of very cold air will cross from Greenland and bring cooler temperatures, much cooler than we normally see coming off the ocean.
Winds are then likely to shift to a northerly over time, and perhaps even later to an easterly.
Snow showers will be common in the north and west, especially at altitude. There will be bright spells too - shifting this murk away. GFS is predicting a generally wintry outlook for the whole week. Southern/eastern areas could stay just too warm to benefit. Cold rain is horrible.
Potential for heavy snow exists - but likely to follow rain in the south (again!).

John Hammond (he's a weather man!) predicts some lengthy cold: https://weathertrending.com/2018/01/12/on-the-hori...
19th / 20th January will probably be dire in the West Country.
I am helping my mate move house again. Last time I did this not too many years ago, I had to follow a snowplough across Salisbury Plain to get there, and the weather was much the same the whole time we had furniture in our hands.
Anything but heavy rain... please (insert your favourite sky fairy here).
