On a final note, sun spot activity is zero and for a long time too. Good sign for a bumper winter 2018/2019.

Had enough this year. Winter 2018 is going to be even worse, I guess.

Meanwhile, in the Alps:

Meteo Tarentaise said:
Good evening, we're talking about it yesterday, the forecast for the return of east is confirmed for the next few hours.
As indicated yesterday, it is especially the southern alps that will be really affected by abundant long-lasting and intense snow, waiting for more than 1 Feet of snow to the east of bonneval on arc and bessans, near the Italian border. !
This episode will have for our tarentaise to start a new storm of Lombard, we could again reach 120/130 km / h on the ski areas and more than 150 km / h Wednesday in high mountain near the Italian borders.
The wind episode should start Tuesday night to finish Friday morning only, the height of this episode is scheduled between Wednesday 12 pm and Thursday 22 pm!
At the same time, the rainfall on upper maurienne could overflow as early January on Val D ' isère and tignes, especially on the south slopes of the ski areas, beginning of rainfall tomorrow night around 22 pm.
But attention a snowy episode is also expected tomorrow between 7 PM and 13 pm on a good part of the tarentaise, LPN AROUND 1600/1700 M on the whole of la except on Val D ' isère and tignes or the cold air Coming from Italy will never be far away...
Then the lombard should start blowing and the whole of la should be foehné, except for once again Val D ' isère and tignes.
With regard to the cumuls expected in Val D ' Isère, there are still quite a few uncertainties by Friday morning but some models are quite impressive with large cumuls to the key, for example the modèle and gfs model sees more than 1 metre of snow on the Southern areas of Val D ' Isère, others like arome are more discreet, finally arpege sees between 40 and 50 cm locally 60 cm.
You will be informed of the situation on Wednesday.
Good evening to all
Weather Tarentaise
Above was already translated (badly!) by Facebook. My bold.

I'm not sure what area the map covers, but, nice colours! biggrin

Those heading to Corsica for a sunny Easter break may get a surprise.

Heading for around 2020/21 min activity and keeping low cycle for a few years it would seem. 15-20 years that is.

Is that the Maunder Minimum which = Thames freezing over and generally increased heating bills?

Normally yes, but we didn't exactly have a strong sun since the last minimum around 2010, so it's a pretty quick return to a minimum. Not really the normal cycle.

I suspect Global Warming will be blamed for the change in the Sun though...

That was a period when it was noticed (min activity), surprisingly this sort off thing with the Sun has been tracked for a long time, not just recently. It did get a tad colder during that time. I understand there is some controversy as to the accuracy of the observations.

Anyhoo, around 11 year cycles, up to peak activity then down to minimum. We are on 24 at the moment, not sure what 25 is predicted to do.

Flipn annoying though, just when I get the time to try to image a few they bugger off.

I did think there was something wrong with the reporting in general recently - seems to be quite a few years been mentioned as the change of the cycle, yet it's been far too frequent to actually be the case for a normal one.

I actually did a project on my last year of my BSc looking at sunspot cycles in a lake... from 385 million years ago.

Knowing you, that's just a big puddle in your back garden. You've had enough rain.

Looks beautiful!

The ground is sodden down here. It did brighten up yesterday long enough to dry out the lawn so I could mow it, about to piss down again now. Looking nice next week.

Rather annoyingly, I can't even place where that is. I thought I'd been to most of the ports up that side of Scotland but it doesn't look familiar.

Just done a week on the Norfolk Broads. It was more of an expedition.

Fugging cold and constant fog.

Not been in fog that doesn't lift by mid morning before. This descended on the Tuesday and was still so thick today that we gave up at lunch time and came home.

Multiple bike rides this week in fog that never seemed to end. It was constant drizzle yesterday evening.
