Afternoon,

As I mentioned a page or two ago I’m off to Manchester tomorrow from Swansea.

For those in manchester and various points en route, what’s the road conditions on the M5 and M6 like?
We were going to take the Z4 but due to the snow I’m thinking the Discovery 2 is a safer bet?

Carter, are you north of Applecross?

Your pictures always remind me of that area.
I'm on the Applecross coast road, near Shieldaig... so, yes. smile

The mountain in the photo is Liathach I believe - the loch is Torridon.

Lovely photo, although the photo of Melgarve pips it in my book for sheer snow volume.

TBH, looking at what's forecast, I'd stay at home tomorrow.

Yup, but if you really have to go out then go out in the Disco as you'll have much better visibility in snow/blizzards than if you were in the Z4. 4x4 will help a bit in the D... will help a lot more if you have snow/winter tyres. If the charts run true there could be quite a dump.

It's unlikely to be much fun.
If you really really have to go, go now ahead of the storm.

Which part of the above suggests the Z4 is a good idea (or even making the journey)?

It's not the conditions today you need to worry about, it's the conditions tomorrow.

We had about an inch around 10am but melted now. M60 was very slow for an hour back to normal now. Tomorrow possible 10cm in north Manchester

The exact track of snow for Sunday is highly uncertain, and the snow-rain level is very marginal, and it may yet be a damp squib... but if you're in the red areas on this right chart, there is a good chance you're probably gonna get blasted with 10-20cm of snow from roughly midnight Sat to midnight Sun. Great fun if you can get out and do some skiing, sledging or hiking in it for the day.

I use an MX-5 as my only car in the Arctic, with around 6 months of snow. If you're prepared and know what you're doing/ have the correct tyres it is doable. Risk is if you have other idiots causing problems, if the snow gets too deep due to drifts, or you don't know what you're doing driving in snow with the car.

The thing is the trip could be very, very slow and unpleasant. Unlikely to be dying in drifts, could get stuck behind accidents. A (not particularly nice) 4 hr motorway trip has an 8 hr potential.

You lot can keep the snow up there! The last thing I need is snow down here in Kent,
Don’t mind it snowing from the 23rd though

Friday's run was great for me but today's is poor.

I'd have to say that looking @ Friday's prediction vs actuality that chart is a bit crap

One would imagine the always free flowing M6 would be fine, it's never full of muppets, who can't drive on a dry road straight road anyway, It could possibly be a wonderfully empty motorway on a crisp clear snow laden day. No jacknifed lorries, no muppets slithering up your jacksie. 3 clear lanes all recently snowploughed, slated & deserted, the armco fixers could even be having a day off for a change.

That run on Friday was predicting Sunday so there is no actuality yet, the two charts show the difference in the predictions
