Nuts isn't it. I saw 500g butter for over $8 (>4 quid) in the supermarket the other day. It's because we have to pay "international market prices" apparently, but nobody's adequately explained why it's still substantially cheaper to buy the same stuff on the other side of the world.
When I first arrived I wandered round a supermarket in Chch in general shock wonder how anywhere could be even more expensive than Australia. What I find weird is the fruit and veg prices are just so erratic. One day avocado will be $1 each, then $4 then 2 for $2.50, seemingly at random and generally the same everywhere. I just get what is cheapest as that is usually because it is fresh and there is a glut of it.

Part of the cost can be explained by there being 15% gst on everything. Which makes tax a lot simpler, unlike in the UK where biscuits have no VAT, but chocolate ones do, but cakes don't whether they are chocolate or not, unless they are served in a cafe or restaurant or are still hot.

Bath taps. I'm refurbishing a bathroom and my daughter wants waterfall taps.
Salesman points to the tap in the brochure f/(£@(; £900 . Oh that's no good, it doesn't have provision for a hand held shower attachment. Then you need this one, points to the £1300 one.
eBay? £50. Machined out of solid brass . WTF!

Exactly this. The ebay seller may even be in China or somewhere.
