The Visionhire repair man was a regular visitor to our house. Bloody unreliable those old TVs. Regarding the Video 2000, we had one of those. Looked really high tech with the multiple digital displays. The instructions came on a cassette which the young me watched over and over because there was bugger all else to watch on it. Not worth a visit to the local video hire shop...

I had (still have ) the 206B great machine
I remember those - proper bit of kit.

Have Nakamichi made themselves known on this thread? I guess it could get a bit esoteric.

Let’s not all get into a hifi nerd competition....

Back on topic - so much of the 70s and 80s kit looked bloody brilliant - beautiful alloy cases, lovely weighted knobs, VU meters - just class. Far nicer than a lot of the cack that came later.

Forgive my self indulgent post

Been using the Meridian today just love it. A lot of my music is borrowed and ripped from friends CDs now but I maintain a large and healthy CD collection.
Nakamichi you say ? The Dragon you say was the coveted one but was beyond my means. I went through a few decks but settled eventually on a Sony - built like a tank. Not my picture but you will get the drift

Tuner wise I wanted a Pioneer 91 something but got a Sony 700es at a reduced ex display price. I think of around £180

That lasted around 20 years but developed a left channel intermittent fault so was given away to a friend. In its place came a Denon Dab/FM. My friend found someone who fixed the channel fault on the output and its still working to this day

Cassettes went out of favour around 97 I think when I was seduced by mini disc a great format but that only really lasted until the advent of this amazing totally game changing device

I'm not an Apple fanboy but I was just stunned at what this device could hold. As a result I bought one and then used I tunes that in turn got me into computers now the music is split between CDs and Flacs etc

I had one of these, a Technics SL10 linear turntable. It may still be going strong, it got left behind during a marriage break up ten years ago along with my Audiolab 8000a and my vinyl collection...

Now you're talking. I had one of those in the mid 80s, hooked up to a Technics amp, dual cassette deck and digital tuner which all stacked together without need for cables and daisy-chained power. Happy days.
Still at my mother's place, I think.

Same tuner and amp, but without the GE and the double deck version of the cassette player.

I loved all the buttons, meters and lights of those systems.... and then moved to systems with nothing. Just a volume knob.

Indeed. I still have a Linn system I bought in the late 80's - with this exact amp. Who needs buttons!

I didn't know ReVox made such a thing.... I lusted after their reel to reels for years and ended up (happily) with a TEAC/Tascam.

May I be vulgar and ask how much that turntable cost? ReVox were never exactly budget equipment. smile

I thought this thread was about the "old days" ? This stuff is for young 'uns. I had these as a young man - Garrad SP25 and a Rogers amp. All in lovely trendy teak.

I was a whippersnapper at the time. went to an older colleagues place one day and was suitably impressed by his system. Consisted of a turntable that had to have the platter removed to change/reposition the belt and a Mclaren pre-amp and power amp that had a total of 3 knobs between them.

It was a very long time ago in my pre-children days and with a decent salary, but I seem to remember something like £300. The A77 open reel I bought at roughly the same time was about £450, and the tuner second hand at £150. The turntable and tape recorder were end of line discounted items. ReVox made an even more desirable one but I couldn't stretch to that. Possibly early 1970s.

Analogue satellite Amstrad anyone ?

Want something less mass market get a Pace:

Or if like me you were a bit of a snob and wanted something more upmarket how about an NEC 3022:

But whatever you chose if you wanted to watch proper channels you needed a videocrypt decoder:and sky card !

If you were unlucky you chose BSB and got a squarial and maybe a Philips receiver (I did as I fancied both systems - oh dear)

Now you've done it! Anyone remember the Nakamichi cassette deck that did auto reverse - not by turning the play heads round but by spinning the whole cassette around! Spent hours in HMV drooling over one of these!

Talking of which, my first 8 track - 1985. The tapes were stupidly expensive.

Bought it off Ade Edmondson [/name drop]

I have no photos but, yonks ago, we bought our young son an all-in-one stereo with a record deck which was mounted at the bottom but slid out, motor driven.

Remember them vaguely from mail order catalogues. Possibly Binatone ?
