Not long after I remembered Alma Cogan, I suddenly remembered this chanteuse. She once appeared on TV wearing a low-cut dress, and as she sang the tops of her boobs were wobbling like blancmanges. My father coughed in embarassment, and I had to cross my legs to hide my stiffy.

Sex on legs. Kathy Kirby.

Oh yes. Black and White Minstrel show (most popular show on TV at the time but a WTF from me, even back then). Mind Your Language, unfunny lazy racism.
Lenny Henry had his first acting job with the B&W minstrels, the stage version, in 1975.
The Black & White Minstrels used to appear in summer season shows at the Futurist Theatre in Scarborough: I think that would have been in the 1960s/1970s. Does anybody else remember John Boulter, Dai Francis and Tony Mercer?
Oh yes. My mum fancied John Boulter, although how she could tell what he really looked like is beyond me. Wasn't Tony Mercer the plump one?

Billy Cotton's Band Show always had a sultry singer every week. Remember Alma Cogan?

Sadly died young, 34, in 1966.

Oh yes, Alma Cogan - the singer with the 'laugh in her voice' - as she was often described. I remember her being in Scarborough starring in one of the summer shows - I guess that would have been in the 1960s. Generally speaking we think of these people as glamorous and all that, but catch them at the wrong moment and they look anything but glamorous. Somebody said they'd seen Alma Cogan walking around the town - no makeup, hair a mess, and laddered stockings - a total disaster area as far as glamour was concerned. frown

Still, I'm not glamorous at the best of times! rolleyes

Going back to the Black & White Minstrels - Tony Mercer was indeed the plump one - he used to sing the slower, easygoing, songs.

John Boulter had a very nice singing voice, and used to do songs that exploited that. Dai Francis was the energetic one, and he used to do the lively songs.

...then, later on, we used to go to the Ken Dodd show - they were marathon jobs alright. One night it was nearly 1.00 a.m. before he finally relented and allowed us to go home. laugh

Sadly, the Futurist Theatre, that was used for these shows, has come to the end of its useful life and I hear it is about to be demolished.

Oh, wow; I didn't know that. You never know what problems some of these glamorous entertainers might have in their private lives.

Indeed, which is why we were deprived of the best of Dusty Springfield. She really could have been one of the all-time greats.

Every now and again someone reminds me about Ken Dodd and his marathon performances. Always makes me smile. What a trouper, even at the age of 90, although I suppose his shows end a bit earlier these days. He just loves to perform, it's what keeps him going. The last of the old music-hall stars and it'll be a sad day when we hear the worst.

To be frank I was shocked when I found one of those out of the ark Nixie tube desktop things was regarded as the bees knees, when a few months before I'd been programming a small desktop calculator using machine code simply to do the heavy repetitive number crunching for my thesis, and now carried a pocket calculator capable of blitzing both of them.
Ridiculous isn't it? I bought a Sharp Elsimate 8100S in an arcade in Tokyo in January 1975 and it was about 7000yen or £10

I still have it and it still works.

Used to get mine from Milletts (remember them?). Every year I got a new one of these, because after a school year I'd lost or broken most of the contents.

Good shout.

I had this kit - or something almost identical.
You had it, bah.
I've still got mine and the slide rule.
