Has it not occurred to you that perhaps people enjoy reading ghost stories without the pub bore relentlessly chiming in with something along the lines of 'Actually I think you'll find...................'

Fine to state you don't believe in ghosts. Fine to point out alternative explanations. Not fine to relentlessly post in a thread, often in a sneering, supercilious tone, when others have asked you to please stop as they get your point.
Pretty much sums it up. I would go further but he’s arguing his legitimacy the same repetitive way he argued every posters experience.
I would have posted far more, as I’m sure would others. Having personal experiences rubbished doesn’t exactly encourage.

Should I not argue my legitimacy?!

It is said some animals have a sixth sense, our cat has now taken to staring at the stairs with huge wide eyes. There’s nothing there but it’s very odd. These are the stairs where I heard the footsteps and where the cleaner had the experience leading to her running out screaming.
Been going on for a couple of months now and the cat won’t go up the stairs which was a daily thing up to this.

The best parts of this thread are where people have highlighted scientific processes that I'd never heard of before. Genuinely interesting and informative. I feel I have learnt new things as a result.

If that side of the argument had been successfully silenced by those individuals on the other side of the discussion who have been displaying the need to do so then this thread would not carry any information or hold any value.

Discussion is good and if someone posts alternatives explanations to a particular post then this is a good thing. It is not a bad thing to be silenced. Trying to silence discussion is a terrible thing. Trying to ration an individual's posts to an allowance of one response per thread comprehensively fails to comprehend that each post is different, eachbpist can lead a discussion in a new direction and each response has the potential to make a thread better.

Some people do not believe in the same personal, subjective opinions as you. We are all part of this. We all have personal, subjective views and even beliefs that maybe no one, a few or the majority also believe in but never everyone. To try to silence those who don't have the same beliefs as you is not a sign of wisdom and it certainly does not act to validate any views but those of the person being silenced as they are clearly a threat.

If a view or belief is viable then it is open to debate, it should be discussed and if someone proposes an alternate explanation then discuss why that may not be pertinent. But to counter an alternate view with attempts of censorship is not ever going to help support your belief.

Cats have an enormous range of hearing at something like 40Hz to 90Khz, combined with 200° sight which just about extends into the ultra violet range and a sense of smell around 15 times better than our puny olfactory system. I'm not sure cats have a sixth sense but their other senses have pretty large ranges.

Cats are also bonkers.

DA, hopefully I was included in that smile

There was a marked silence from most of the regular naysayers when these points were raised in this thread.

As I said on the previous page, those who ridicule without a reasonable understanding are as foolish as those they admonish.

Indeed. Many animals, like pigeons and sharks, can detect the Earth's magnetic field, which we cannot. Other creatures can detect electricity, tiny amounts generated by their prey when it moves. In fact, I think sharks can do that too, so they have a 6th and 7th sense.

And as said, many animals have enhanced versions of our senses, better vision, hearing, smell etc.

I'd agree with regard to ridicule. Joshing is one thing but ridicule tends to err on the side of trying to silence debate.

I'm not in a rush to believe in ghosts. I tend to favour proven scientific arguments and for what that cannot explain tend to err on the side that we just haven't worked it out yet.

But if ghosts tend to be pale, miserable looking people in Victorian clothing then Yorkshire seems riddled with them. wink

In all seriousness, the abilities of animals to use the magnetic field of the earth (magnetoreception) or also photosynthesis, or phototransduction which allows you to see are all well known to be quantum processes.

It is very probable (more detail previously on this thread) that consciousness itself is a quantum process. This has been observed and tested. This answers the question of how our brains can process so much so quickly, which was previously thought to be impossible to the biological mechanics of the brain; but it raises many more questions of how this works.

The nature of quantum particles in their very nature mean that two particles on each side of the brain can "communicate". I have no idea how much further this could lead us, the mind boggles (apols for the pun).

When we say humans can't use magnetic fields, we do not know this to be true. The protein that is present in the eyes of birds and in other creatures such as molluscs and bacteria is also present in our own eyes. The mechanism that takes this magnetoreception from the eye to the brain is unknown, possibly because our understanding of the quantum processes in the brain are so new. So maybe we can, and maybe we can't. The possibility is there however.

You keep mentioning Quantum processes like it's a known thing, what does that actually mean? Do you actually know what a Quantum process is? I don't think even the scientists have a proper understanding of it yet and yet that word gets thrown around all too often usually to explain stuff that currently doesn't actually have an explanation.

"Why are there ghosts"?

"Because it's Quantum"

"Ahh OK then, that explains everything"

I guess the implication is that we could effectively be 'seeing' ghosts as a type of historical screen burn or artefact. It's not a completely unreasonable theory, although it would make all alleged photographic and video evidence worthless in an instant.

I have not mentioned ghosts there at all?!? I was simply pointing out that the assumptions that humans are not able to detect magnetic waves might not be true.

Should you wish to find out about quantum processes, then go ahead, I will not be writing up a guide for you, though there is plenty of detail earlier on in this thread.

If quantum physics does not work, then the satellites would fall out of the sky, USB sticks and lasers would not work amongst many other well known things.

Really, when you hear the people denying ghosts exist also saying they don't believe in quantum processes, you do have to laugh!

The ghost thing was tongue in cheek but you seem to have concentrated on that to the exclusion of the rest of my post, I think your interactions with Rawwrr are making you a bit too defensive wink

Where in my post did I say I don't believe in quantum physics? I was merely pointing out that while certain quantum effects have been observed, we aren't really any closer to understanding WHY they occur except for some unproven theories so currently, saying something happens because it's "quantum" is like saying it happens because of The Force (Star Wars tm).

My case in point, you've tried to use quantum to try to explain satellites and USB drives, as far as I am aware there is no quantum physics involved in any of them, just good old fashioned normal physics wink

Apologies if I misinterpreted!

As a side to this topic, Satellites, MRIs and USBs all use quantum physics calculations to make them work. They wouldn't work without them.
Many quantum theories are proven, quantum physics has been going for quite some time, however there are always new theories coming out, one of which I was discussing quite a bit earlier in this thread, consciousness as a quantum process. I didn't seem to elicit a very good conversation on this, possibly crap posts on my behalf, however the point of these posts was not to say ghosts are caused by quantum processes, more a question of could quantum processes cause people to think there are ghosts... as well as dust on cameras and apparently twitchy cats causing people to think this as well smile
