Sectioned?

They weren't asking him to hold on to their Kalasnikovs while they slipped on their suicide vests were they?

In the scale of religious enthusiasm this is pretty low on the list and pretty harmless to anyone, I would have thought. Do you really want to live in a world where everyone else is just like you?

I had never heard of this. All very strange - but each to their own... I assume they don't want to behead us all or blow us up, so it's harmless.

It wasn't long ago that we were worshiping stone penises. Well, my family were.

Shiva Lingam? I found it very curious when I was in Kathmandu

I doubt this is a wind up. just to echo the few others who have correctly identified the issue, in judaism the sabbath is from sundown friday to sunrise on sunday. No work is to be done, and that includes preparing food. The lengths to which some will take this depends on the individual, but it is not unknown for some to not even eat pre prepared food, or take the lid off a pot noodle.
Work is also interpreted as making fire or sparks apparently, which can happen (sparks) when switches / relays operate.

I did wonder about the ornament in your garden.
I was just too polite to mention it.
I could see you were aroused.

I was too embarrassed to mention it.

It seems my post asking if the lift was made by a certain lift manufacturer was removed. Apologies if anyone was offended, I'm not the offending type. As you were.
You're a bad man biggrin

Looks like I missed the fact your post had been removed - hence why I seem to have posted the same thing.
Likewise not meant to offend, just thought it was humorous.

Will be interesting to see if mine also gets removed and for any reason given...

Sometimes it seems political correctness can be taken a little too far.

So if they cant do anything that involves effort, what do they do for 2 days? Just lay in bed?

Does this thread come under anti-semitism?
Are there any judaism followers on PH?

Everything about Jewish people is anti-semitic. Gets quite boring really.

Did you know that many domestic appliances have a "Sabbath Mode" designed to facilitate observance like this?

Upon reflection, I ask myself (and I honestly don't know) whether one can be Jewish and non-religious. In other words, is Judaism a religion, a race, or both? My own post was intended to scathe the ridiculous rules and the even more ridiculous workarounds which many (most?) religions apply; it was only specific to judaism in as much as that's what this thread about but I'd have taken the same approach to any religion. I don't feel that being atheist and decrying the seemingly-absurd practices of a particular religion are racist, but if somebody can't be one without being the other then perhaps you're right. I'll redact my comments on that basis and perhaps those who have quoted me could do likewise please.

In the Old Testament the punishment for collecting wood on the Sabbath is to be put to death.

The punishment for raping an unmarried woman is to pay her father 50 shekels of silver and then marrying the woman you raped.

Hardly a repository of common sense.

Babies aren't born anything, they're then indoctrinated by their parents and surrounding culture.

Any religion is a choice. It's just an idea. Some are bad ideas, some less so.

A sub-text to my OP is not to be anti-Semitic, anti-Jewish or even anti-religion, but anti daft things that people do for no good reason, especially when they are impractical, and more especially when others are required to go along with the daft ideas, or at least to keep a straight face.

Personally i have always thought Judaism is the religion and jewish is the ethnicity.
You can and do have both but there are jewish people who do not follow judaism.
Like any religion judaism has degrees which followers will adopt. I think orthadox jews being the most religious.
I am not jewish, follow judaism or actually have any interaction with any jews so i can not say for definite.

In Israel, on the Sabbath, I was told that the lifts in Hotels simply stop at every floor. By the time you get to your room on the 44th floor, it's time to head back to Reception to check out.

I designed a lift controller as a project at university, and included a sabbath mode.
My fridge freezer has a Sabbath mode. Not sure what it does as I have never switched it on.

It switches off the light that is otherwise left on when you close the door... wink
