I spent six months backpacking/4wd'ing from Cairns -> Cape York -> Darwin -> Gibb River road -> Kalumburu -> Broome -> Perth.
Best part of the trip was Cape range/Ningaloo park. Reef is 100m from the shore unlike on the East coast, spotting reef sharks, big fish and turtles never gets old. Could have whiled away months,if you can do it as a side trip or on your way back home I'd recommend it.
How ruthless is the gibb river road? I would really like to do it but I keep hearing different things from people and I’m not sure who is exaggerating/playing it down. I have 4WD low and high range and all terrain tyres; but no lift kit, no snorkel and no winch. I would be doing it in the dry season but I’m just not sure if my car could handle it. confused

You'll be fine with your car in the dry. Most the stories you've heard will be from the station people on the road who have to live day to day in the wet season. As you've probably gathered, driving quality in the dry is down to when the road was last graded. It's an unforgettable trip, the gorges are superb. We took the road north to Kalumburu which is about as remote and wild as it gets and there's some rivers to cross even in the dry. Just need to take it steady and keep the gas on. We had a knackered old Holden Jackaroo (Isuzu) that had a big swage line up the side (Kangaroo hit !) and I put a bit of a lick on coming back down on the K road. The car was pretty much shaking itself to bits by this time and front shock detached itself and the whole thing became really vague to drive. Spent the morning at one of the stations we camped at replacing lost bolts between the front end/chassis ! Cobber said,"There's my garage, help yourself,I've got bushfires to fight on the perimeter !" When I got back to NZ i bought a BJ40 Cruiser as they're just so cool and indistructable, that's the car to have for sure.
