I bought these Timberlands around 3-4 years ago (I think!), and had the left one built up to compensate for having one leg shorter than the other due to a childhood condition (there is also a lift inside it); for some reason I never got around to wearing them more than once, so dug them out today and realised I really like them, and they also don't look too ridiculous with my slim fit (Levi 511) jeans.

@ ambuletz - A Chelsea or Chukka boot sounds like a good all round option. Worth waiting until Jan for the sales?
I think that's the idea, I'll look around during the xmas/new years sales. I'm wondering if anyone can throw out some brands that might be worth looking at for formal/black leather chelsea boots, chukka boots, desert boots for work. (<£100)The only brand i know of is DrMartens and clarks. Ideally a high street brand (so that I can go somewhere and try it on).

I like those. Decent looking work boot.FreeLitres said:
Has anyone bought any Dr Martens boots recently? What is the quality/stiffness like these days?
I had a pair of black 8-eye boots many years ago and I really fancy getting a pair for old times' sake. I like the idea of the brown distressed/waxy ones:
Long time lurker, first time poster in this thread!I had a pair of black 8-eye boots many years ago and I really fancy getting a pair for old times' sake. I like the idea of the brown distressed/waxy ones:
I've bought two pairs of DM boots and 2 pairs of DM shoes over the past 12 months, and the quality is fine, if you can find a good production run. Unless you specifically plump for the "Vintage" range or a few select models that are made in the Northampton factory (with corresponding markup), majority of the boots and shoes are now made in China, Vietnam or Thailand.
One pair of boots I bought (cherry red) used poorly grain corrected leather, so the top coat cracked almost immediately upon first wearing them (think they were Vietnamese). The Chinese replacement pair were of much higher quality, with the leather feeling noticeably thicker. I have a pair of shoes in the brown, waxy leather, and they're of a very high quality (made in China).
Regarding stiffness, they still take an age to break in; once they finally give in, they've been fantastic, especially in the recent wet and cold weather. Went out in the snow in them and they never skipped a beat.
Hope this helps.

Oops, I've done it again.
New arrival at TKMaxx. Not a style I would have usually gone for but at a price I couldn't refuse.
Sure to get the hearts racing here - Cheaney Tweed boots in Wallnut grain with a tweed vamp:
[url]My Man-logic played a key role in this purchase though:
I already have tan boots in this last but these are half a size bigger and I wanted to try them on
If I don't like them when they arrive, I might list them on eBay to make a couple of quid
If they don't sell, I will b able to return them to store for a full refund
Good choice! I presume it's all gone as I couldn't find it on TKmaxx. I really like a mix of tweed and leather, very nice combo. New arrival at TKMaxx. Not a style I would have usually gone for but at a price I couldn't refuse.

What size did you get?

I think they only had one pair and it happened to be in the size I wanted to try (7.5). I usually wear 7.5 or 8 in shoes but these country boots on the 12508 last do wear large. I have the tan Tweed C version of this in a size 7 and it fits well even with thick socks. I want to start wearing an insole in my boots so I want to see if this extra size would be enough to accomodate them. What size did you get?
I like the look of the leather/tweed fabric combo, but I'm unsure how robust/weather resistant they will be. I like the ability to hose down country boots if they get caked in mud, but I'm not sure how easy these would be to clean.

Got a similar Docs with waxy leather. I think it's good value for money especially during sales. I snagged one for £35 from last year's sale.
Leather is ok, mine has a slight distressed look. It's not entirely too soft or hard either but I've not worn it regularly to break it in properly. However it's comfortable and fits well. My only complaint is the shoelace keeps undoing itself

My suggestion would be Samuel Windsor. Online only though. The only brand i know of is DrMartens and clarks. Ideally a high street brand (so that I can go somewhere and try it on).
I’ve bought several pairs from there and been impressed with the value.
The size range is excellent too.
Those Tweed Cheaney boots arrived. I've only had a quick look as I'm saving them for Christmas. First impressions are that I really like them!
I just stumbled upon the background info on these. They are the result of a 2015 collaboration with Cherchbi. The fabric is supposedly waterproof as it has a rubberised backing. I think I'll keep them!

The Cheaney photos look a bit better than the TKMaxx ones.

Re Dr Marten boots, when you get them, literally cake them in Chelsea dubbin. Leave it to soak in for a couple of weeks. They should then be more supple from the off. Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
