^smile I can see that carpet in one of the Queens private rooms at Balmoral; good stuff I'm guessing?
Yes it’s Axminster, I have a similar sample under my desk for a little added luxury!

With regards to the carpet, I am the showroom manager, not powerfully built enough for directorship yet. Family firm not Carpetright. The carpet I’m standing on is about the same price per sqm as one of the shoes!

Will look into the shoe tree, do I just need an 8?

Also what care/maintenance do I need to be doing daily/weekly?
Charles Tyrwhitt trees in Medium size would be perfect.

Note, CT regularly do a £10 off any order voucher so look out for those as they bring the delivered price to £15. Try to get some shoe trees sooner rather than later though.

@cst get a nice horse hair brush as well. Get 2, one for daily brushing off dirt and the other for polishing.

Picked up a pair of these today, probably not to everyone’s taste, but I like them smile

You can get those carpets picnic blankets for free from most filling stations once you've collected about 500 points. hehe

Does anyone have any experience of footwear from Hoggs of Fife? I’m interested in some new boots and am wondering what the difference is between Hoggs at £265 and, for example, Cheaney Ribble C Veldtschoen Chelsea Boots at £395.

I have a pair of the Rannoch. Amazing quality. Have the matching shoes too. Both with the commando sole.

Prices do vary a little on-line as I am sure you've already noticed. The Workshop Scotland is where I got the Rannoch. They were significantly under RRP.

They are true to size if maybe slightly on the large size.

I wouldn't hesitate buying more.

Long overdue, here's the double monks I picked up last month. Many may not have heard of Carlos Santos, (except for Santana) neither have I until AFPOS and Skoak started stocking them. Tried it at the trunk show in summer and I'm sold. It has a fantastic arch support, reminds me of EG and for the money, it's pretty good value.

I have been looking at buying the Hog Rannoch boots recently and have had them in my basket for a while. Made by Cheaney, waterproof Zug grain leather, veldt construction. The spec makes for a great winter boot! I keep lusting over the Cheaney Jarrow though. I think I need to bite to bullet and order them at full price.

Thanks freelitres and goaty bill for the advice. for the meantime I've only bought this so far, lol.

I'll get a polish and consider the shoe tree eventually. The shoes are only £70 anyway (half price), not like they're a £500+ pair like some people seem to post on here.I figure the polish would be done every few months, with the above being done as/when/weekly perhaps. Hell, I've used mr sheen in the past (gasp) and it's worked fine.

I have a pair of Carnoustie country brogues and they are very well made. Robust with double leather soles. Again, true to size. Recommended. i've had them a number of years, although not worn too often; they're tough and wearing well.

I was in dire straights once (as in a situation, not in the band), and used that.
Gives me the shudders just to think of it.
Get yourself one of these, a cheap brush (for now) and a soft rag.
It will do a much better job, and you can even get it all from Sainsburys / Tesco / similar supermarket / any shoe repair shop / Timpsons etc.

Yes please don't use that cheap liquid shine stuff. I'm pretty sure it is silicone based and will be very difficult to remove if you wanted to start using propper wax.

Get some Kiwi standard black wax or parade gloss as mentioned above.

Worth noting that in the USA, Kiwi Parade Gloss also contains Silicones but in the UK and Europe this isn't the case. At least this was true about 10 years ago;

I seem to recall that, in my case, the only shop open near me was a Sainburys, and that is all they sold. I was working away from home (bloody Scotland - no offence to people of the kilt, but it's a long way from [my] home) and the hours were 07:00 - 19:00 and my accommodation was out in the boonies.
I say "bloody Scotland" because the environment is utterly ruinous to leather shoes, both soles and uppers, even in summer.
The hint is: for all the money floating about in Aberdeen 4 years ago, the best shoe shop in town was Jones the Boot Maker, and nearly every one of their offerings had dainite soles.

Anyway, that liquid stuff is like paint.
Curex nail polish remover removed it.
I never forgot my wax polishes again.
