Great, thanks for that. The red stain does look good too. I guess you haven't had any issues of the dye transfering to your shoe linings?
None at all. The stained ones feel waxed too with a nice smooth finish, whereas the plain ones have that rough unfinished feeling. Both are nice, but I prefer the stained ones too.

I had a bit of a flashback from the first thread. Can you remember a guy that didn't post all that much but turned out to have a pretty decent collection of Northants shoes. One time he posted a picture of some very expensive new boots but a few people ribbed them as looking like "Kangeroo boots" or something silly. He didn't seem to post much after that which is a shame.

Who was that guy with the shoes? I miss seeing seeing his new aquisitions

I seem to recall him. I believe he has since moved onto bespoke... wink

Wouldn't the stained and waxed shoe trees make them less able to absorb sweat/moisture as opposed to unfinished versions?

Hang on, tell me it wasn't you! I'm convinced it was someone else.

ETA: Just spent a while on Google images to try and locate the post - it was indeed you! I still like those boots by the way.
I must be getting confused but I'm sure there was a different guy that came along with a decent collection but stopped posting in the thread. I'll have a think about it.

Again, I just found what I was looking for using a Google Image search. (The PH search function never finds what I'm looking for)

This is the nice collection I was thinking of. It was posted by kelv_w in the old thread. Has he posted in the shoe thread(s) recently?

By the way, some of the ribbing in that old thread was SAVAGE! Funny, but savage. Yes, I'm mainly looking at you, Sohehe

I knew exactly which photo you were referring to. Good find.
A quick search of the members directory turns up no hits for 'kelv_w', so perhaps a name change has taken place and he is in fact still posting out there somewhere.

I still believe, though I said nothing at the time... taking into consideration the perfect condition of those shoes that, the poor chap either lacks a right leg/foot, (or lacks both legs and has a severe shoe fetish going on there).

A lovely and immaculate collection for sure.

I'm after a bit of help please.

I have a vision of a pair of boots that I'd really like but can't find anything quite right. The nearest thing I've found is these from Jeffery West; the shape is right and the buckle is in exactly the right place but I'm not particularly keen on the embellished shape or the textured finish of the leather.

Anyone got any recommendations that could fit the bill. In terms of budget I'm not looking to spend north of £300 if I can help it. Absolutely no more than £400 at the very most.

I'll have a look. Are you thinking more pointed/formal or more rugged/work boot? Need a propper stiched on sole, or not important?

ETA: I did some searching. Most of the boots that have a large buckle so low down tend to be chunky work boots.

There is a traditional boot style called a Jodphur boot, which can range from quite rugged to quite formal. The strap and buckle usually wraps around the top of the boot, but sometimes they are designed with a slightly lower buckle. The best I could find atr these Carminas, which look particularly nice. These are around the max budget, but there will be other manufacturers doing a similar thing;

Not sufficiently speculative. A far too reasonable and sensible suggestion that I had rejected from the first!
PH standards must be maintained! hehe

Maybe a morgue that solely deals with unidexters.

Thanks, you're on the right track there.

I'm fed up of wearing "work shoes" for smart-casual use e.g eating out, drinks with work etc. but a lot of boots I've tried just look like shoes anyway when I've got jeans on hence the reason for wanting something with a buckle that's at least partially visible.

Hey InductionRoar - I remember you saying that on very high end (i.e. Bespoke level) shoes, one of the signs of quality was when the fiddle waist extends into the heel stack, as the stack as been carved to accomodate the curve. Some of the makers emulating a fiddle waist will flatten out the waist before it gets to the heel so that the heel stack can be kept flat, as in the Cheaney Imperial soles;

On those Carminas, it looks to me like the waist extends into the stack

Have they used some kind of manucaturing shortcut to achieve this look? I'm just thinking that with this waist and what I presume is a hidden channel stiched sole, the construction looks amazingly good for the approx £400 RRP. What's the catch?

What are those, Bob? I quite like the look of them but the heel may be a touch high. Wouldn't mind trying some on if they're within budget.
