How long ago was Cary Grant doing his stuff? Fifty years or so? It’s all very well consulting with our forbears for what is and is not acceptable, but things move on. To emulate them too closely becomes a pastiche.
I'm sure you look lovely with no socks.
there is no such thing as timeless style. Things change over time, otherwise we'd all be wearing powdered wigs. You've only got to look at debates like the "should i wear a blue suit and brown shoes to my wedding" debacle to see how opinions differ, and weirdly how annoyed people get about them. Certain things we can all agree are stylish, some things are more subjective.

However... i just sold a pair of tassel loafers for the primary reason that i thought they looked st with socks, but i didn't like the look of me wearing them with no socks... so they were just shelfware.

I imagine that Inductionroar looks quite dashing in his.

Personally I think tassel loafers are more a summer look. Although I do love a good pair of socks with them in the winter. More casual I’d say. You need a good pair or cropped trousers or jeans with them.

Can anyone recommend some decent extra low no show socks? The ones I have, although great with trainers are still not low enough for my loafers (tassel or penny)

Any suggestions on some brogues or derby's in tan/burgandy/charcoalish colours please?

Currently perusing various sale sites but I'm a bit out of touch.

I've always quite liked Oliver Sweeney and have a couple of pairs that I think are getting on for 10 years old and have the "proper" green lining/sole as it looks like they have two ranges now, the "full" range and some cheaper "london" ranges?

I'm also seeing quite a few "made in spain" brands.

Examples of things I like:

https://www.pediwear.co.uk/pediwear-collection/pro...
https://www.oliversweeney.com/knole-burgundy-derby
https://www.stuartslondon.com/mallory-oxford-shoes...
https://www.afinepairofshoes.co.uk/collections/sal...
https://www.zalando.pl/oliver-sweeney-bologna-eleg...

Just spent a morning in Birmingham and the stores have nothingfrown

Very well but I would suggest going to try a pair because of the nature of them I had to downsize to an 8 and I’m usually a 9.

Oh and I always wear them with socks. I think a nice contrasting colour like a green goes well with the black.

Not sure how many are currently continuing their summer sales now, but £100 off seemed to be the flavour of the day at most of the Jermyn St shops over the last few weeks.

Might be worth the trip down. I know from painful experience how limited the selection can be outside London.

The sole looks Barker on those.

I believe some are Barker, some Loake and some are made abroad (Spain? India?)

Are those the Tyrwhitts?
They are. Amazingly.

Tyrwhitt black wholecut
I cannot help but think they'll be not very good.
In which case you may be surprised. I have a pair and have found them to be comfortable, good looking and decent quality (for the price).
I'd put them on par with Loake, above Barker and below Cheaney. hehe
Excellent. Thanks Grover, the input is much appreciated.
I got the inside scoop so to speak on those Tyrwhitts from an extremely reliable source.
They are made by Barker, so well spotted FreeLitres.

I will try a pair in spite of myself, but they didn't have anything close to my size in when I was last there, and they don't do half sizes which is daft really.

At half the price of Barker's own.

Thank you, in the end I had half a day around the Northampton outlets and stocked up for the next couple of years smile
