I'm sorry but "decent" people don't order the total destructions of cities incurring the deaths of thousands and thousands of civilians.
Do you understand what WW2 actually was?

It was a TOTAL war.

It got to the point where the gloves and all bets were off. Do you actually understand what it takes to defend yourself, let alone win, in that scenario?

As I suggested in my post above, the concept of a total war is very hard to grasp for those who haven’t experienced it, especially if your idea of war is shaped by post WW2 conflicts. Even the nastiest post WW2 conflict pales into insignificance against the sheer scale of death and destruction of WW2.

It’s not a nice thing to think about, but what was done and what you refer to, needed to be done.

It's depressing AF how little understanding some people have of a war that changed the world banghead

Sure I’d feel bad about it but they weren’t going to surrender.

It's part of the whole US-style fetishisation of those who just happen to have chosen a particular career path.

I think it is important that we celebrate our similarities rather than our differences so any one of these girls would be suitable to represent humankind in a face to face meeting with aliens.

It does say something about our societies over the millenea that in a thread with a gender neutral title we're all talking about men.

One thing I would say about Jesus is that his philosophy were rich pickings for the liberals and egalatarians who eventually came along.

Who was the greatest egalitarian? Napoleon probably did a lot for the cause even though he seemed to have few qualms about killing tens of thousands. He was clearly no egalitarian himself.

Top women- Sappho? Ancient poet whose work was celebrated for centuries but somehow vanished. I'm sure it was unrelated to how passionate and bisexual a lot of it was.

Elizabeth 1st?

Greatest early womens rights activist? Extending the vote to an extra 50% of the population is a pretty big deal.

I wasn't aware that Mother Theresa was a bloke???

You live & learn I guess. rolleyes

How about Boudicca? Cleopatra? Margaret Thatcher? And as already suggested, Sylvia Saint?

And before anybody else suggests her, Barbarella was an imaginary person.

Albeit a very vivid imaginary one.... cloud9

ot being at all religious I didn't know that. I must confess I assumed that he did exist, even if he was not the son of god and never fed 5000 people with one fish. Without diverting the thread, although that's happened a lot already, is current wisdom that he is a fictitious mix of the best bits of many people?
Yes, most objective scholars currently seem to think that's the most likely scenario, that Jesus is a combination of 3 separate characters.

For some reason I'm thinking of the Cat being asked to justify his existence when another, perhaps more worthy, could have been given the chance instead:

Inquisitor: This is your judgment day, bud. I gotta be cruel. There can't be no favours.. I have to ask you the question. Justify your existence; what contribution have you made?

The Cat: I have given pleasure to the world because I have such a beautiful ass.

Inquisitor: Well, that's true.

The Cat: Can I go now?

Inquisitor: That's your case?

Inquisitor: Some might say that was a pretty shallow argument.

The Cat: Some might say I'm a pretty shallow guy; a shallow guy with a great ass!

I missed page one otherwise I would have said close the thread. How can you possibly argue with Scarlett.

Are you guys seriously suggesting that we should send Scarlett to meet the aliens? eek

There could only be two possible outcomes:

A. We'd never be able to get rid of them, or

B. They'd immediately cart her off to their home planet and start an intensive breeding programme for their own nefarious ends.

C, if you've seen Under the Skin- they send her back to the streets of Glasgow to capture men by seducing them. smile

Thinking about it slightly differently, is there a Schindler-type figure/great humanitarian who risked a ton and changed the world for the better? This list makes good reading, but I imagine similar has happened many times:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individuals_and_grou...

Or John Rabe, a Nazi who helped the Chinese during the Nanking Massacre and received little thanks for it until the Chinese found out.

I put off watching it because the plot seemed like it was written by a horny 14 year old, but it definitely had a character and, like you say, kept you watching.
