The 'plastics are bad' debate.

Courtesy of the BBC mid morning radio prog I now know that there are local action groups taking on the challenge to reduce/remove the use of plastics...having see the Attenborough documentaries and various news items, they are anxious that we've let this pernicious and deadly foreign agent into our midst.

If all goes well and they get enough support they can get their town/borough dedicated as 'plastic free' or somesuch, another virtue to be signalled on the nameplate (just below 'a fairtrade town' or 'we hang foreigners') as you cross the border.

Those naughty, naughty plastics! Begone foul hydrocarbons!

Coming to a stall in the precinct near you, very shortly.
Quite agree. The problem isn't the plastic, it's the dhead humans that let it loose on the environment and chuck it over the side of the trawler into the sea.

I suppose I could have said lazy crew that can't be arsed to bring all their crap ashore so just lob it over the side whilst out in the shipping lanes, but having said that, most of the ste that washes up on the shoreline is usually fishing paraphernalia - bits of old net, gloves, wellies, rope, empty oil/grease tubs and ripped fish buckets.

Gone are the days where you could go up to a counter and ask for Fork Handles - you need to be able to take a blister pack containing your four candles to the till to have it scanned with the barcode printed on the back of the pack.
My first two go-to places for fork handles or indeed four candles would be old fashioned hardware stores which have no barcodes. But then it does take rather longer as the chat tends to diverge into all sorts of interesting but irrelevant topics such as whether we'll be haymaking this week, or what Mrs Biggins has been up to.

Isnt that because the Chicago version is very much like a deep dish pie with raised sides, as opposed to the Noo Yok style that we are used to

Speaking of coffee shops, why can't I order a black coffee without being asked if I want milk with it !
And why can't I ask for a black coffee without being asked if I want an Americano?
Because a black coffee could either be filter coffee from a jug, or an espresso topped up with water.

I prefer Americanos to filter coffee, as I find that unless it's a fresh jug of filter coffee then it's been sat brewing for a while and is disgustingly bitter for me.

When following a recipe, why do they give me measurements in cups!? Quarter cup of this, 2 cups of that blah blah blah. What fkwittery is this? How is a cup a form of measurement? Grams, millilitres, ounces are standard measurements. Not a fking cup! I have cups of many sizes. May as well tell me how many key bumps of flour I need for all it matters.

Yes, cups come in many sizes but the cup is also a standard measure. Metricised for global use at 250ml. In the US, half a pint.

Conveniently it's possible to buy standard cup measures to keep in your kitchen drawer to help with your cooking. The cup measures come as, er, spoons. biggrin

People who post stuff on these forums exactly the same as somebody else has posted about half a page above. Do they make no attempt whatsoever to read what has been going on before posting?

If the thread is a couple of hundred pages long, as many are, at least apologise if it has been mentioned before, but there is too much check.

I suppose nobody has posted this before ...
