Do the Germans use credit cards much? They seem pretty rare in NL where most people use debit cards (annoyingly maestro rather than Visa or MasterCard) all the time, if Germany's similar it may make sense that Aldi/Lidl didn't bother with credit cards as standard.
Last time I was in IKEA I noticed that they had dropped credit cards and only accepting debit cards (and cash). Presumably due to the disparity between credit card charges and debit card charges. Also, some online retailers (and, ironically, HMRC when paying various taxes online) will charge a surcharge for using a credit card.
Charging extra for paying in instalments by direct debit is another PITA.

People that post up 'Interested' on items for sale on FB.
dheads.
I think, when you browse ads, if you click in the field to respond, the FB app offers three or four 'suggested responses' and that's one of them. dheads.
I fear it's a 'stupid people doing what they think is the right thing because the internet told them to' scenario.

Worse are people who respond to questions on Amazon with "I don't know". Well, thanks for your help. dheads.

FFS you dolts! There are three buttons at the bottom of the page. One of them is "Reply", but just next to it are two more buttons, one is "Bookmark" and the other is "Watch". So stop clogging up my "My Stuff" feed with cretinous vacuousness, and use the proper button for your required purpose. Or, if you have something to add, type a proper response...

Insurance companies are bad at this. And the DVLA too, I think.
This used to be the case but for the last couple of years it's been illegal to charge extra for certain payment methods. Thank the bloody EU and their meddling Payment Services Directive for that one. We'll soon be free of their clutches and companies will be able to levy good old-fashioned British transaction charges again though.Halmyre said:

That's not quite the same. In this case you are effectively taking out a loan for the premium and paying it off with a finance company. The additional cost is justified as interest/admin.Clockwork Cupcake said:

I didn't think that was allowed any more? I renewed my VED at the end of last year and noticed that while the web site had always previously said it would charge a surcharge for using a credit card, that had gone away at the end of 2018 so I used mine. I'm tight enough that I wouldn't have paid a surcharge for it.No idea how authoritative this site is: https://www.businesscompanion.info/en/quick-guides...
Looks like I just missed it last year. Maybe HMRC are different.
ETA - ^ as above.

Did the recentish change to not allowing companies to charge extra for credit card purchases result in some stopping accepting credit cards? I can see that must have hit some small businesses quite hard, a taxi driver I spoke to reckoned it would cost him several thousand a year.Charging extra for paying in instalments by direct debit is another PITA.
We have the bizarre one here that one of the biggest supermarket chains only takes Maestro and not Visa or MasterCard, which in an area with lots of tourists and ex-pats means there's everlastingly people getting to the till without realising this.

We've just had a survey e-mailed around work to see if people are interested in someone running Dutch lessons. The first question is would you be interested, so far 115 people have replied Yes and 1 person has replied No. Why would you bother?RizzoTheRat said:

I don’t know about now, I haven’t been over for a while, but in the nineties, when I’d visit my son and his family in Germany, I’d usually take them all out to dinner on one night.A couple of times I ask for die Rechnung, or der bezahlen, and after it came, I’d get a card out to pay it, and my German daughter-in-law would say, “Let me check that they take cards Frank, you’re not at home now, we’re still catching up.”

Sounds like a great way to get out of paying for the dinner you invited them to A couple of times I ask for die Rechnung, or der bezahlen, and after it came, I’d get a card out to pay it, and my German daughter-in-law would say, “Let me check that they take cards Frank, you’re not at home now, we’re still catching up.”
I'm more forgiving of places that don't take card payments if they're out in the sticks. Any places in London/Manchester/Leeds or similar don't have much of an excuse and I just assume they're trying to dodge taxes.
However, I was at a tiny little brewery with a small bar in Bethesda in Wales this weekend and ashamedly a majority of the lads in my group didn't have any cash on them. There's nothing to make you stand out as an outsider quite like gesturing at somebody with a card when all they have is a little lock box with some cash in it to take payments.

Urban myth. Contactless cards do ask for a PIN from time to time, but there's no such thing as a daily use limit.
just out shopping, will put my card to the test.GipsyHillClimber said:

B&Q and Gap not contactless, in my area. However, I was at a tiny little brewery with a small bar in Bethesda in Wales this weekend and ashamedly a majority of the lads in my group didn't have any cash on them. NASA/Americans complaining about India's anti-satellite test creating a cloud of debris, but conveniently forgetting similar debris created by their own multiple ASAT tests :/
I guess it's something to add to the list of things Americans think are OK as long as it is them doing it, but not OK if someone else does it
