Regarding kettles, it is a fact. Surprised me as well! Must be to do with the voltage.
I'm afraid it isn't a fact. My American friends (in America) have a US made electric kettle.
The reason they don't is to do with voltage - at the 110V the amperage required to heat the water would be so high as to make the kettle dangerous.

Americans do not have flymos.
Current!

That the sum of 10 consecutive numbers in a sequence made from the sums of the preceding two numbers, starting with two random numbers of any sign and number of decimal places, is exactly 11 times the 7th number in the sequence.
Wait, stop...run that past me again. Provide an example, for pity's sake.
Post any two numbers (providing they are both not zero) and I will.

From the electric kettle in my Canadian hotel room this morning... 1500W, similar to UK ones, just double the current at 110V;

I cannot abide those cheapo kettles that they give you in hotel rooms. They really boil my piss.
Why would you be using the kettle for that! eek
I think that might be a parrot flying overhead.

There was a thread a while ago that I believe made it to legendary thread status where somebody admitted to pissing in a kettle. Can't remember the details but I was just about to congratulate the poster on a very subtle joke most wouldn't get.

Wrong - on his 4th voyage he landed in what is now Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama, all of which are in America.
Wasn't mainland America though

p, e, p+e, p+2e, 2p+3e, 3p+5e, 5p+8e, 8p+13e, 13p+21e, 21p-34e

Sum is 55p+88e

Which is 11 (5p + 8e)

Which is 11 times the 7th number

The ratio of a number in the sequence divided by the previous converges on Phi, the Golden Ratio. Phi is the most irrational number.

Whilst on the subject of Clive Dunn, Clive was also his mother's maiden name.

And at the other end of the astonishing facts spectrum, one to get the NP&E faithful frothing at the mouth... The UK has roughly 1% of the world's population, but 20% of its CCTV cameras.

Don't you just love 1.618 ?

Fact:

I remember the pound being valued at 1.618 euros and therefore the euro being valued at 0.618 pounds

When I was last in Saudi Arabia, the locals were paid US$10,000/annum to keep a camel by the government

Not quite true.
Australia has the largest population of feral camels in the world. Somalia has over 7 million camels, followed by Sudan, Ethiopia and Niger (1.5, 2 and 3 million). Australia sell the camels to other countries for meat, and I assume that's why the other countries have so many, that and for working. Saudi Arabia have 250k just behind UAE.

On the USA facts.
Only 10% of Americans have passports...

Wrong!
It's now 40% as prior to 1995 Americans did not need a passport to travel to Canada and Mexico, and other Caribbean states.

There is a circular race track with a circumference of half a mile

you do two laps, the first lap you do in one minute

At what speed must you travel on the second lap in order to average 60 mph for both laps

Erm... Wrong

2 laps is a mile, So a 60 average would require you to complete the 2 laps in 1 minute. Being as you took all of that minute to do the first lap that is impossible.
It's early and I'm drugged up on Morphine in hospital so I am slightly doubting my own conclusion but I'm reasonably certain of it.

I'm not sure the original post qualifies as any sort of astonishing fact though. The Japanese Dr above who got bombed twice and a fair few of the others are.

Circumference = 2*Pi*radius

Therefore an increase of 1ft in radius would correlate to an increase in circumference of roughly 6.28ft
I still can't my head around this. But I've checked with an online calculator and any size number I put in, the circumference increases by 6 of the reasons increases by 1. But I just can't picture that I f you a wrapped a belt round a 1ft football it would need a 6ft extension to go round a 3ft ball, but the same extension would work on the apart sustenance if it put on a few pounds over xmas. I think it's just one of those times you have to trust the maths.
