We didn't go slower when they grounded Concord, we went much, much quicker.

Phft, 3.5 hours to get to New York (well the flying bit anyway) - I can Skype globally now.
You could phone New York 90 years ago.

The type of engine that powered Concorde - the RR Olympus - is still used to power some Royal Navy frigates.

Not any more. Pakistan are still operating some Type 21s, a few random countries have Type 22s and the Argentinians have still got a Type 42, but the last of the navy's 22's were scrapped 4 or 5 years back.

Type 45 uses an engine that's based on the Trent series of engines used on many airliners, and the Type 23 has the Marine Spey, based on the engine used in the Phantom and Buccaneer.

Oh and the Hunt class are powered by Deltics, which British Rail used to use quite a bit

Not any more. The last RN ship to be powered by Olympus was Illustrious.

Spey engines power frigates. WR21s derived I think from the RB2-11 help power destroyers and the new carriers have Trent derivatives called MT30.

I served on Ark Royal and we had 4 Olympus engines smile

The generators were Paxman diesels also used in intercity 125's

The Deltic is essentially three Napier Culverins combined into a single engine. The Culverin itself was a licence built Junker Jumo 204, an aero engine used in the JU52 amongst others.

One of those cranks is rotating the wrong way. The supercharger on the left side is at the wrong end of that 'bank', is it not?
I've just been reading about the Deltic and apparently, for some reason, it only works if one of the cranks rotates counter to the other two.

That animation does something weird to me, it's like some Lovecraftian horror that sends you mad if you see it.

A further bit of reading says that if all crankshafts rotate in the same direction then one set of pistons can't come together for a firing stroke. I may need to sketch this out...
