When you go to the office, don't dress for the job you have, dress for the one you want.

i'm pretty sure everyone is winging it...........from experience

I'm sure Fighter Pilots etc aren't - but for normal humans - everyone just pisses about trying to not get sacked in my experience.

That's also very true. I meant to a certain extent, like getting overly optimistic with things. But I have limited skills, so who the fk am I.

I just like cars. lol

to be fair - my flippant response about pissing about isn't strictly accurate. I think I've always pushed myself to do more - I never know how to do it when I first start.........but then I do the second time, unless I got it wrong the first time.

Maybe that's why everyone feels a fraud to some extent!

If your Plan B is not as carefully planned as your Plan A, then its not a Plan B.

Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that experience comes from bad judgement.

A wise old uncle (who was, at the time, a lot younger than I am now) put me off buying a used Porsche 911 I had been saving for.

His advice on running older exotica was "If you can't afford to buy a new one you can't afford to run an old one".

Bought a new VW Corrado instead and thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.

As for my uncle's advice? I have a feeling it stopped me buying a good few moneypits over the years and saved me a good few thousand pounds.
Your uncle's advice may have cost you dearly - have you seen how used 911s have appreciated in value?

This was the subject of a thread not too long ago, and the one that stayed with me from then was:

'Never pass up the opportunity to have a pee'.

Also, one I always liked by Roald Dahl:

'it is better to incur a mild rebuke than to perform an onerous task'.

"Never take a laxative with a sleeping tablet"

"One mouth; two ears. Use them in that ratio"

Back in my tutoring days, I lost count of the duff advice given to my students by their teachers. Which led to this sage advice.

"If someone starts a sentence with 'take my advice'.... then take MY advice and ignore them. True advice comes with words of wisdom, not from someone who feels the need to reinforce it"

"Learn to trust your gut"

"You can only stand tall when you're not burdened with baggage"

Coupled with the above quote (which is my own) I would also add the following. "Beware of people who look to you to pull them up from the mire. Only if you yourself are standing tall, will you be able to do so. For if you are not standing tall, or burdened with baggage, gravity will work against you and you will fail to provide any meaningful assistance. But it is guaranteed that presented with the opportunity, the one burdened in the mire will happily pull you down".

That last one is one of my own, somewhere deep in my book of shadows. I've seen enough threads on this site as well as real life that there are people in relationships with "drains".

"Drains" are people who in medieval times were known as vampires, they drain you of energy and almost resemble rocks. Giant, heavy rocks, slung around your neck, causing you to stoop over and slowly drag you down. They look to you to lift them up but only succeed in pulling you down. Such people are toxic and should be cut loose at the first opportunity.

"You will never stand tall with a rock around your neck".

I've got stacks more of them but these will do for now.
