One I forgot:

It's not what you know....

It's not even who you know...

It's what you know about who you know ....

New one to me. It's about painting but covers other things.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

Life is not a dress rehearsal.

When lying on their death bed, nobody ever said “I wish I had spent more time at work”.

Don’t ask things of people you aren’t prepared to do yourself.

My dad's only attempt at issuing life advice.... Just before my final assessment for a qualification:

"Blearyeyedboy, you've spent several years and a lot of money on this. Don't fk it up."

It was strange but surprisingly helpful.

buy appreciating assets

Rent depreciating assets
A common one but utter nonsense. Do people renting things commercially really kindly absorb the depreciation for you? Seems a little unlikely. biggrin
It actually is not nonsense, A jet is only going to work out for you (as a purchase) if you cover enough miles (at least 350 hours a year) to even contemplate it) in order to cover the physical overhead. Even then, it is probably not as cost effective as renting.

The same applies to owning/renting a yacht or a holiday home.

Sometimes it is more financially beneficial to rent certain assets, rather than own them.

A wise man speaks because he has something to say. A fool speaks because he has to say something.

“Never drink coffee after 5pm.”

I took the advice seriously. He was 80, wise, had built a successful company over decades and had a private jet.

This one is rubbish; the First Lord of the Admiralty wouldn't design a nuclear submarine, for example. But, he might ask someone else to.

There is a difference between prepared to and capable of.

In any negotiation, always look around for the person getting the worst end of the deal. If you can't spot them, it's you.

Better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool, rather than open it and remove all doubt.

Here are the two key tenets I live my life by:

If you don't love yourself, you can't expect anyone else to love you.
This doesn't mean you should be kissing the mirror at every opportunity, it's more about loving who you are, which in turn allows others to love you.

Have a good time, all the time.
I'm not daft enough to think life's only full of good times, but there are enough bad things that will happen to you over the years, without you adding to it with bad decisions (or a lack of decision-making). If you're not enjoying life, change it; that is, whatever it is you're not enjoying (job, car, relationship, house, whatever).

In 41 years, neither one of these has let me down.

And now they are yours. smile
