We have a friend is very phobic re cats. Now that is very irrational. We were on holiday last year: went for seafood dinner, in a fish restaurant, in a fish hall, part of a fish market, next to a dock where they bring in fish. One to two cats hanging about.....

She kept leaping up from table, shrieking and running away. Would then come back for 3 minutes and repeat.
My wife is scared stiff of cats, she's never been scratched or anything like that by any cat. In the past we have had to leave a restaurant on holiday as a cat or cats have been walking around and this was mid meal. I just had to pay and get out of the restaurant leaving a half eaten meal.

If she is going into a house that she hasn't been in before she will ask if any cats are there and if so she will not go in.

I myself don't do heights, I have no idea why but just can't do them.

I am petrified of flying. I know it's irrational and I never used to be, but a friend died in a plane crash 9 years ago and that sort of stuff isn't meant to happen to people you know.

From the moment I arrive at the airport until the wheels touch down at the next one I am a pale, short tempered, cold sweating, overthinking mess. Every bump of turbulence or change in engine note and my mind goes straight to "this is it".

That being said, I'd like the chance to learn to fly. Maybe gaining some semblance of control would help.

My gradual dislike of heights has grown over the years. I think it’s the loss of the confidence of youth and the awareness that bad things really hurt..
In theory, you should get braver with age. After all, if it all goes wrong, you have a less life to lose.

My irrational fear..,....bees.....but only when I'm asleep. If a bee appears in my dreams, I'll wake up screaming. Utter terror. When I'm awake, absolutely no fear of bees at all. In fact, I've considered bee keeping, but my wife voted the idea down.

I think that's a first on this thread, a fear of something while asleep that you're not afraid of whilst awake!

Fish. Big, little, alive, dead. Fish. Icthyophobia, it's called. It's daft, and irrational, but I have it.

Nothing to do with Marillion.

I could do that. Used to rock climb a far bit and although I suffer a little these days, I can still do it. But high diving board remain a problem.

Fair enough.

I think in the context of this thread, not getting out on this would be irrational. It was rated for 300Kg.

High diving: not irrational if you have, like me, never had any diving training.

Jumping in from 15/20m is enough. Worrying about going in from higher than 25m wouldn’t be irrational, because there is a real chance of me dying or getting badly injured.

Mainly when I was younger really, but a couple spring to mind.

Unfamiliar plumbing - the noisier the worse. Many years ago leapt out of a shower after a slight bit of water hammer

Spiky things, in particular cacti - not so much a sense of fear as a sort of unsettling feeling

Even though you know you are capable of the jump or dive?

Kids who have their faces painted with cat faces or similar. No idea why but really creeps me out. I don’t understand why they would want their faces painted. I am fine with men or women with makeup on or clowns or people who have blacked up like forces personnel. Odd

How are you with recreational blacking up?

Not really bothered. It only seems to be when children do the animal face paint stuff.
