I was going to resist commenting on the aquaplaning comment and subsequent comments but then thought fk it why not? I recently had a small episode of it, I have Goodyear Efficient grips all round on the car with over 4mm of tread front and 6mm on the rear so tyres weren't the issue, I was travelling at around 60mph on the inside lane of the motorway, so speed not really the issue, yes it was raining but not torrential so that wasn't really the issue, what was the issue was the amount of water running across the motorway at that particular point which I drove through on a slight bend in the road, my car, a 56 plate Focus diesel entered the water and immediately started to feel light and move to the left at which point I took my feet off the pedals and just steered into it a little, no drama but a bit disconcerting, so pray tell me does this mean that I'm a crap driver, my cars rubbish, 60mph is too fast or just one of those things???

Would you have aquaplaned if you'd been travelling at 50/40/30 mph? If not then that suggests that speed was the issue. You made a judgement that it was safe to drive at 60mph. It looks as if that judgement was wrong so I'd say bad driving.

You get loads of these nonsensical statementss on here. To aquaplanebis to loose traction in standing water, a physical force that no one can overcome, no eve a PH driving god.
Not everybody who hits standing water aquaplanes. And it's possible to lose traction without any water being present at all. It's poor observation and not driving in accordance with the conditions.Countdown said:

I'd say it was bad driving if he then crashed or did something dangerous. The fact he was able to safely overcome the issue of the car aquaplaning is good drivingYou made a judgement that it was safe to drive at 60mph. It looks as if that judgement was wrong so I'd say bad driving.

Lets say for arguments sake YES he would have aquaplaned at any speed over 0MPH. What would your almighty and total wisdom of all things aquatic and motoring suggest?!I am not taking this seriously at all.

I would have assessed the consequences of aquaplaning and the alternatives options instead of driving.I am not taking this seriously at all.
If I'm definitely going to explode in a ball of fiery flames I'll walk, or stay at home. OTOH if I'm going to aquaplane but the consequences are harmless I'll take the risk of driving.

In my opinion many people who have done well in business are too slow to acknowledge (if they acknowledge it at all) the role luck has played in their success.
People who fail in business are far too quick to blame bad luck. But people who are successful rarely think much luck was involved, and those who fail rarely think a lack of acumen was to blame.
What is almost certainly true is that the harder you work, the luckier you get, and the lazier you are, the unluckier you will be.

I aquaplaned at 60mph on a motorway, i would have at 30mph, adenoidal voice 'driving to conditions', it was 3 inches of standing water.Thesprucegoose said:

How do you know you would definitely have aquaplaned at 30mph? Or that it was 3 inches of water? It's like your almost trying to convince people that it would have been impossible NOT to aquaplane, because the laternative would be bad for the ego.
I'd just like to caveat by saying I'm not a driving god. i make lots of stupid mistakes. I made one today. There were factors outside my control but, looking back, there were plenty of clues which i missed, which would have avoided the fk up.

On December 31st I intend to have an early night.
A few years back I was doing the usual telephone rounds of the family on New Year's Day wishing everybody well. I phoned my eldest son, who had two small girls at the time, and asked him if he stayed up to see the New Year in.He said they were far too tired and went to bed early. He asked what we had done. I said we had waited up to midnight and watched Jools Holland, said happy new year to each other and gone to bed.
I then phoned my mum. She was in her nineties, and lived in sheltered accommodation. She said she and her neighbours were down in the common room until the early hours of the morning singing and dancing.

You comment is just another stupid comment on here, nothing unpopular. Aquaplanning is a force against standing water, tyres dissipate water to allow traction. At a certain level of standing water it doesn't matter how fast you are going the law of physics overrule. Anyway happy Xmas. It's like your almost trying to convince people that it would have been impossible NOT to aquaplane, because the laternative would be bad for the ego.

This reminds me of an uncle who ended up in a ditch after hitting black ice. Nothing he could do apparently, would have happened at any speed, just bad luck. I asked him, did he hit all the other cars that were in the ditch having done the same thing? Never got a response.
that's just luck, ive seen defenders on winter tyres in ditches, yet summer tyred cars not, hard for phers to comprehend as it is real life not bedroom physics.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
