My Cousin is (or was atleast) a Flat Earther.

I was working offshore when I saw her FB post about it. I asked her if she could explain why i could not see land from my cabin window but if i went up to the bridge I could see it.

She told me she didn't understand the science, but what she had seen on you tube was enough to convince her..

This is really the issue, they don't understand the science so they create their own science based on what they observe and subsequently what they think must be the only plausible explanation. Which is what very small children do when trying to understand this new world they have been born into.

And there we go - Facebook, YouTube.

We thought it'd be robots that would kill us all but it's looking far more likely to be social media.

It's astonishing and terrifying how easy it is to influence people and we're all susceptible to it.

While it's amusing in the flat-earth context, it is exactly the same mechanism as radicalisation of all flavours.

Although you don't even need any scientific understanding to know the earth is spherical, you can see it with your own eyes. The idea that people used to think you'd fall off the edge if you sailed too far is a myth, for thousands of years it has been accepted as a sphere, or some variation of one.

A few years ago there was a joke about fixing some flaw with iPhones by immersing it in a bucket of water for an hour. A surprising number of people fell for it.

Are all flat earthers so broke that they couldn't afford to charter a small plane to explore their theory?
I haven't studied in great detail whether there's a dome or not but-
Scenario 1- Too much risk of flying into dome.
Scenario 2- You'd end up flying into space.
Seems plausible.

I just want to see a pic of the ice wall surely one exists?
From what flat earthers seem to post they will just find a picture of an ice cliff somewhere, due to poor research this is just as likely to be in the Arctic as the Antarctic, and say this means the whole area is nothing by cliffs. By this logic if you showed them a picture of the White Cliffs of Dover they would have to assume that the whole of the UK is inaccessible from the sea.

Of course if a flat earther knew anything about logic then they wouldn't be a flat earther.

I have it on good authority that due to global warming, the ice wall has now melted.

Hang on, where do flat earthers stand with climate change?

Which piece of equipment can I use to see 5000 miles away? I'll disprove this nonsense this weekend.
Your eyeball.

Look up in the sky. That great shiny ball that is blinding you during the day is a great deal more than 5000 miles away. Likewise, the the moon you can see at night is also more than 5000 miles away. Those are the easy ones. All the other pinpricks of light in the night sky are also also likely way more than 5000 miles away, excepting the few airplanes and satellites you might be able to see.

"You sound like one of those involved in the NASA conspiracy and are probably paid by them..."
For reasons yet to be explained, obviously!

The distances of the sun and moon plus the ice walls are the physical things they try to explain away, but the biggest craziest thing for me is why? NASA budget is touted as one of the reasons for the deception, but them there Jews or the illuminiati are also to blame, apparently.
I rarely look at the stuff posted now by them, it was a giggle at first but it's quite sad in many ways.

But thats the problem with this lot, they look and interpret ignoring any previous investigation, the sea looks flat, water sticks to the earth, therefore it must be flat.

That's great and all but I'm looking to disprove the flat earth theory. I need a device which will enable me to see 5000 miles away, I will then aim the device west from the south west of England. Does anyone know of such device?

At a distance of 5000 miles the Hale telescope at Mount Palomar should be able to resolve anything longer than about a metre. You might have problems getting it to Cornwall though; and what exactly are you going to aim it at?
