Sorry, I'm going to sound thick here but how can I prove to someone without taking them up in a plane or to the sea that the earth is not flat? I live in SW London if that helps. Imagine a flatearther is in a pub with you. You step outside and show him what?
For me, the easiest way is to consider a time lapse video of the stars at night. The way the constellations and features in the night sky appear to rotate can most easily be explained by us being on the surface of a rotating sphere.

Again, the point is not to think about the earth being flat. No-one is suggesting that we continue down the path of proving the earth is flat.

As far as you're concerned, I assume, the sun is a huge ball of gas, millions of miles away. A flat earther might tell you it's much closer than that, they might even tell you it's not a sphere.
You'll tell them they're an idiot, because you know it's a ball of gas. And you may be right, they may be an idiot, but how do you know it's a giant ball of gas? You read it somewhere, or someone told you in school.

My point is that such seemingly ridiculous discussions can have the benefit of making people think more about what they really know, what they understand, and what they've been taught. I'm not saying we have to doubt everything, question everything, disbelieve everything unless we've seen it with our own eyes.

But it can be useful, even interesting, to think about such things. Maybe in future, people will be less trusting of russian memes on the internet, because they think for themselves a bit more, instead of just blindly trusting everything they read.
No I didn't say they were an idiot because they didnt believe the sun wasnt a huge ball of gas. I said they were an idiot for believing the earth is flat (and see above post which shows how easy it is to see it isn't flat) - you are discussing something else now.

I think ridiculous discussions are also dangerous, in that anyone that lacks the thinking power to see flat earth is nonsense is also the same sort of person that will spread a meme filled with misinformation on FB about vaccinations or whatever which has serious implications for people, indeed life threatening ones.

We are all capable of critical thinking, we dont need conspiracy theories to do it though. I have a nine year old who questions everything, despite being taught the world is round. Its not a behaviour that is encouraged by flat earthers 'thinking'

I give up. I keep telling you you're missing the point. You keep telling me you're not. You keep missing the point. You're arguing a point that I haven't made.

What I don't understand is, why do the flattards keep going on about the ball earth being a 'NASA plot' when people have been saying it's round for over 2000 years?

Because NASA is really a secret society that dates back to ancient times thousands of years ago when the Lizard Being Overlords first terraformed the Flat Earth and encouraged the Elite to build the Pyramids and Mayan temples and Anchor What and stuff innit.

Honestly, do your own research! rolleyes

That's because NASA is the NWO/Illuminati/Gay Agenda/BLM all rolled into one (fake) space agency, all other space agencies (including the Russian, Chinese and North Korean, assuming that the average flat earther knows that there are other space agencies) are secret offshoots of NASA, which is why they all put out fake globe pictures. And its not 2000 years, NASA only started putting globes in classrooms in the mid 70's, notwithstanding that the flat earth movement is older than that.

What you expect logic and consistency from a flat earther? As far as they are concerned anything that contradicts a flat earth has to be fake and/or photoshopped no matter how many mental gymnastics they have to perform.

My Dad joined the Flat Earth Society at university in the 1940s. It was, absolutely, a serious society dedicated to promoting a flat earth. Nothing to do with being able to get slightly discounted beer at all. Oh no.

In fact, 80 years later it is still active.

Likewise my Dad and the Tom & Jerry Society at UMIST in the 60's. The annual entertainment budget from the university to all societies was nothing to do with it. Those lads really loved Tom & Jerry.
