I hate Co-op.

Unfortunately I'm surrounded by them. But I do all in my power not to shop there.

Apart from their political leanings, they tried to shut my old local (along with 200 other Marston pubs) and turn it in to a shop no one wanted. They failed, in part due to me. To put it mildly, they did not go about said plan in a particularly nice ethical way.

They also seem to exist as an ethical employer of village idiots, as all their anglophone employees in the ones around me are, to put it politely, a bit special.

Our local co-op was recently refurbished, with a tidier glass entrance housing the new cash machine. It was more recently ram raided and we now no longer have a cash machine in the town.
Seems the Co-op has an attraction for traveller types. They are regulars shopping there - usually for the cash machines, with stolen JCBs.

Do they? right well that's them off the shopping list for good. Overpriced tat anyway.
Not just donate - they have 38 MPs that are affiliated to the Labour Party...

Oh Johnny savour the times you live in. Soon posting stuff like that will end up with a visit from the net police and a sharp slap across your knuckles.
But how totally refreshing it is to read such a post. I know nothing of any pub closures but I totally agree with you about their employment methods. They really do have a higher than average quota of what can be described as special.

From the ignorant cashier who doesn't understand that you don't want to buy their bag as you have your own To the other cashier who doesn't grasp the concept that if you buy an apple pie you don't want it thrown down so it breaks. Then there are the optically challenged ones who cannot see the large reduced label and charge normal price.

One of the things we use them for is all of their own brand toiletries. Everything from toothpaste to washing powder, bleach to deodourant is cruelty free (no animal testing) which is an important thing to us. My local one also always perpetually struggles with stock levels on the same certain things, leading to regular 10p loaves of bread, reduced milk, cakes, yogurts, meat etc.

our village is served by a co-op and its the main shop apart from a very poor corner shop (makes the co-op look like Harrods food hall!)

its one of the franchised ones; I found this out when complaining about the personal hygiene of the staff. these are all locals from the stump variety family tree; I think they share one set of teeth and have a weird religious aversion to showering. Seriously the whole queue were muttering about the smell & this is a village full of horsey types that walk around smelling of dung; which is far nicer! That and the appalling stock levels where most days it looks like something from the USSR in the 70s, with one cabbage in the veg section and bugger all else!

when I eventually managed to find who to make my complaint to they wanted to know which member of staff and were surprised to hear my response of 'most of them, and if your manager doesn't realise then you need to get him tested for a sense of smell'! they also couldn't really explain the stock issue and a year later its hardly improved.

had that level of complaint been levied against any other reputable chain I'd have probably received an apology and vouchers or the suchlike; the co-op barely acknowledged the issue and thanked me for getting in touch.

The one by our head office is staffed by one nice guy who seems to be the only one who does any work. I gave one of his colleagues 11.15gbp the other day to get a fiver back from a 6.15gbp purchase and she gave me a blank stare and then got flustered when she couldn't do the maths!!!! Simple maths I'd expect a ten year old to be able to do.

My local Co-op shop is good for finding discounted items, so a trip regularly results in me trying something new. They never have enough people on checkout though.

They recently installed some self service machines, which are by far the most problematic self service machines I have ever used and they have no one attending them. Last time I visited the self service machines were empty and there was a queue of about 4 people at the single checkout that was open. I only had about 5 items to scan and each time the machine messed up I just picked up all my shopping and started again on another machine as no one was coming to help.

Ours generally has a long queue for the single teller and the 8 self-checks are empty.

I've always put it down to people needing to buy lottery tickets/cigarettes/not having cards - but I do remember them being in use prior to a recent refit.

I generally manage to use them, other than from time to time paying for a bag when I've used my own.

The one where I was at uni was managed by a guy who had a PhD in Maths. I hope he would have managed. I have had this issue in many places, which is stupid as they can just type in the amount tendered and it will tell them how much change.

Interestingly that store was on the same road as another co-op. The one down the road was full of scrotes from the estate who would shout abuse at students as they walked by. It was generally a godawful place that you didn't want to go near. The one by the uni had speakers outside playing classical music, which worked a charm in keeping the scum away!

I'm surprised that so many seem to be unaware of the link between the cooperative movement and the Labour Party. The Cooperative Party is actually the third largest party in the commons, but because they have a pact with Labour and campaign under the Labour banner they are not perceived as separate. Not really sure why they still exist.

Convenience store in expensive shocker.

The one in our village Is bob on, you can live like a king if you go in after 6:30pm. Where else can you get a loaf of bread at 9pm on a Sunday?

How dare they take all the business away from the Village Baker and Butcher - who only open Mon - Fri 9 till 5 rolleyes

Seriously guys, stop using bleach and washing powder as toiletries. They are not intended for use on, or in, the human body. Please ask a member of staff at your local Co-op about the specially made safe products available to help keep yourselves clean.

You see that's the one thing that unites every Co-op I've ever been in: a inability to stay stocked up with the stuff you actually want, e.g. bread, milk, eggs, etc.

Never, ever had that problem here. I’m aware there’s two types of CO OP. The old style ones and the ones that advertise on TV.

(We have the new type)

Yep, Tesco Express is often more expensive than Tesco Extra because the Tesco Extra was built on cheap land outside of town.

But it seems the faux moral outrage seems to be who they donate to.

Slight exageration methinks. e.g ' The whole queue' unlikely. (Don't forget the Divi).

Our local CO OP is great. It's quite small but they have their own bakery which is superb and keenly priced. Their own brand salt and vinegar crisps are amazing.

They have lots of special offers, especially on toilet roll for some reason, and I often go in on my way back from work to pick up a nice £2.50 sandwich on it's sell by date for 20p to have for lunch tomorrow. Not been poisoned yet. Staff a very friendly too.

It's always busy.
