Before I joined the military when I was 20 I wasn't a fitness person and never really ran (I don't play football). I had to be able to run 3 miles in 21 minutes as part of joining. So out I went and timed myself. Yup I could do It so I joined. No training required.
Your bodies can do it, people are just weak minded and that fails first.

I've not run for about a year but I could go out today and do 3 miles in under 22mins I guess. I'm 33 now.
I think you're a bit unusual. If at 20 having never run, you could go out and do 3 x 7 min miles b2b thats really quite good.

Wasn't there a 2nd run straight after ? And then some press ups? Cant remember

Never struggled to do any basic test, that's why they were basic. If you struggle with 5 pull ups and 50 situps in sets of 10 then you really need to have a look at your floppy body. (Not meaning you)

That last run I did a year ago was the first one for about 7-8 months. It was a 10k in 49 minutes. Granted I was bloody tired but if you finish some physical exercise and you aren't then you aren't pushing hard enough.

I would suggest that 'the diet thing' isn't just linked with it - it clearly needs to take priority over everything else.
I'm not disagreeing that it's important. What I said is if you care about your condition you will want to eat well. We all should.

Jim;

I'm in virtually the same place as you. Wife has had 2nd baby (2 years ago now) and never lost the weight. Same sort of thing, I'm still slim and trim from the work I do. Shes far less active and thinks she can eat what she wants. The outcome of course is that she gets bigger, but doesnt seem worried about it.

I also worked away till recently (rigs so month on month off) and I think returning home has benefitted our relationship. She is able to have more time to think about herself and has started to eat more sensibly.

Simple things though like I'll be starving hungry after a long days work out in the cold, shes been in all day in the warm sitting on the sofa. She orders and eats the same amount of food I do on the takeaway night. And then is mystified when the weight continues piling up, even though she had a salad for lunch last week...

Any luck with a solution to this?
Have you tried telling her to start exercising and eating less food? I know it sounds pretty basic advice but have you actually tried talking to her about her weight gain? It’s easy for women to exercise at home, even with young kids.

It really isnt difficult.

'Your weight is becoming a problem. I love you etc etc BUT im losing sexual attraction, so what are you going to do about it?'

If she fires back with something thats changed about you and feels the same well, you have your answer, break up. If she does nothing you have your answer, either stay in a sexless relationship or break up. Ideally she realises herself she looks like st and you work together to fix it.

And in the meantime, perhaps find a diversionary plaything to have some fun with?
It's her fault, forcing us to do this sort of stuff. But if she's got a BMI of much over 25, and does nothing to shift the weight, then she's asking for trouble.
A lot of women are really shallow, placing food over the bloke's happiness.

I have a wife. We have a toddler and a 3 month old. She does workouts in front of the tv from YouTube, step aerobics, kettlebells and whatnot. It is possible to do it as I see her do it. That isn’t because I make her do it, it’s because she wants to get back into shape.

Alternatively start a thread about her being being a fat and sexless blob. Let it run for a few weeks and then leave your laptop unlocked and where she'll find it - with the thread open. I think you'll find she will get back on the program pretty quickly. Any chance of a photo?

You won't win, there are a few people on here who think looking after a child or two is the most difficult thing in the world and all consuming 24/7 effort, and any full time mums have the hardest jobs one could ever imagine and should all be knighted.

I suspect these types don't even have any kids laugh

On a similar theme; after the first couple if kids I asked my wife if there was anything she could do to increase the friction between her legs.
I wasn't expecting her to stop shaving!

Suggesting looking after the kids for an hour a day while she goes for a walk might help a little (My friend wife would literally run past him as he came up the drive on returning from work to get away from their kids).

Becoming vegetarian worked for my wife as it's generally not tasty enough to eat loads of.

Sorry but, this is just wrong. I have plenty of running experience (half marathons, marathons & ultramarathons) and all the training that goes with them, speed training included. I can tell you that 3 miles at 7min/mile is quick and not something that most people could just do 'if they weren't weak minded'.

It sounds like you did well in the genetic lottery but, it's ludicrous to judge everyone else using the fitness level of your 20 year old self as a benchmark.

I'm saying what I did. So under 25 minutes shouldn't be impossible regardless of training that some people think.

Not impossible perhaps but, not everyone and certainly not right off the bat without any kind of preparation or training. Attending any parkrun event across the country will show you that.

Running isn't always the greatest benchmark of general fitness though as heavier people (whether through fat or muscle or a combination of the two) have more to carry around which means they require more energy/oxygen to move the same distance and speed as someone who doesn't weigh as much.

In fact, thinking about it, I really should be able to run faster wink

The point is that people should really be active enough throughout their lives to allow them to run like that. Running is a natural human motion that most have done since childhood.

The fact that so many people think that a 25min 5k is some sort of elite performance indicates that this is not the case wink

No it isn't an elite performance, far from it. But, it isn't quite as much of a doddle for the average joe as some people seem to be assuming either.

My sister runs, she enjoys 5k and 10k races and a jog around the local park. She is an active person with 2 kids who keep her on her toes and is someone who never seems to stand still for more than a minute or two. She is reasonably thin and around 5'9" Despite all this, her natural pace is around 10min/mile. Could She run 3 miles in 25 minutes if some nutter was chasing her with a meat cleaver? Well, I hope so but, deep down I know She''d probably be done for (sorry Sis, I needed an example).

Some people just aren't quick runners, regardless of how active/inactive they may be.

Edited to add: No requests for pics of my Sister please
