Football squad numbers.... in this day and age we see all sorts of numbers on the back of football shirts, but we only see goal keepers with perhaps 1 or maybe 12, 22etc.

How come we don’t see them with say, #8 on their shirt, or an outfield player with #1?
Even with squad numbers, only the goalkeeper should wear no.1, IMO.

And any other goalkeepers in the squad shouldn't have anything lower than 12, as there should be at least 10 players in the squad with a better claim to any of those numbers.

Maybe because they are are a link back to a time when people who did physical and dirty jobs also dressed smartly. Back in the day steam train drivers, bricklayers and hod carriers etc wore jackets, waistcoats, shirts, ties and hats to work. Whether they had more respect (or even turned up!) back then I don't know.
Button up shirts I can understand, as back then you didn't really have stretchy materials for t-shirts or anything like that. However what was the point in the tie? If anything working around machinery with a tie is a massive hazard!

Edgar Davids once wore the no. 1 shirt as an outfield player. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-...

The article also shows it's happened quite a lot abroad too.

These days if a player has a particular number that's a favourite they can ask for that shirt number. Shirt numbers are assigned for the season to make it easier for the FA's to keep track of booking and players etc.

Why are there doors at the base of the white cliffs od Dover? What's in there? I just read about the WW2 caves, but don't think they are those.

Brexiters seem to keep going on about having the "EU by the back door" maybe those are the doors they are referring to?

That's cool, just wait until they're automated. And then we can have the start of Skynet smile

This was on a TV programme the other week, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. I may be ridiculed for it, but I think it was the abortive start of an early channel tunnel attempt.

There are multiple layers of tunnels in the Dover cliffs, charting our defensive history from the Napoleonic Wars right through until the end of the Cold War.

Not sure about the doors at the base of the cliffs though.

thanks for that link.... I remember thinking perhaps Ossie Ardiles wore #1 in the 78 WC - but always thought it was poor font and in fact #7. Photo below is in fact 1982 I think.......

1) Why does 1 eyebrow lash always grow stronger, longer and thicker than the others?

2) The old Big Breakfast House is 200metres from the Olympic Stadium, compulsory purchased when they built the park. Why haven't they demolished it or sold it as a normal property?

Only the BBC have reserved channels like 301 and 302 on freeview (might not still be that) to broadcast extra channels for certain things.
