Pub chat about the expression “She was half his age” doing my head in.
Scenario - I’m 40 she’s 20 = half my age.
Ten years later I’m 50 she’s 30 = not half my age
confused
If you are confused by that - try winding time backwards.

When she was 5 - you were 25, which is five times her age.

When she was 1 day old - you were 20 which is around 7300 times her age.

Nowhere in V41LEY's post is the nature of the relationship between the people established. wink

In the context of a conversation down the pub about age gaps it seems pretty self evident!

In 10 years time, the saying would be "She's 20 years younger than him"

You're only half someone's age once

Why do energy suppliers push smart meters with the "itll save you energy/money" line? All they are is a standard meter with some added connectivity.

So you can see whats being used at the time if you really care, but in my house, the heating will still come on at the times its set for, and the TV/home cinema will still be turned on as and when I want to use it. There's no benefit apart for laziness and letting some IT unregulated/unknown company have a back door into your home network...
Because they are required by government so to do I believe.
It is of course as you say utter, utter bks as is most government energy meddling.
They do not deliver the claimed savings for more than a short period except for a small number of dedicated savers. Most people modify their energy usage initially but soon go back to their original usage as it is more convenient/easier.
I guess its the mentality that if you are suddenly faced with something that says 'Have you realised THIS is how much electricity you are using' that that will cause people to sit up and think about to reduce it. Personally it seems stupid to me, if the TV and the cooker is on I'll use more.

Someone did say something about reading your meter using wifi so they don't have to physically read it but not sure if that is true.

I've been receiving 'Have you realised THIS is how much electricity you are using?' information for decades. It's called 'the bill' biggrin

Why do so many Chinese people shuffle their feet when they walk?

It's so annoying and they must go through shoes so quickly!

Why do all electronics smell the same?

Earler today I had to take one of the CNC mills to bits to replace a couple of micro switches, it smelt exactly the same as when I exchanged some buffer batteries on a different CNC 30 odd years ago.

Mills or lathes, the electronics all smell the same, I might give our CNC grinder a sniff tomorrow spin

My dad used to shuffle his feet all the time, and he wasn't Chinese. smile

Mind you, one of his favourite phrases was "shuffling round like a bleeding chinaman." There were plenty around in Limehouse where he grew up, so I suppose he should know.

He attributed his own shuffling habit to years in the fire service. He said the big boots always used to slide down, and if you didn't shuffle they were prone to fly off. It brought us lots of laughs, as he was forever tripping over the edges of paving stones. I can't watch Corporal Jones tripping up on the opening credits of Dad's Army without thinking of the old man.

What kind of footwear is traditional to the Chinese? Loose slippers? Could explain it.

What was the first boat/watercraft to plane?
A surf board, I would imagine. Or, more likely, a canoe with a bunch of terrified Polynesians in it. And then one of them realised that surfing could be fun rather than frightening. smile

Or did you mean the first powered and deliberately planing hull?
I was thinking of deliberate but not neccesarily powered. Sailboats and windsurfers can both manage it but I'm guessing that it's still a fairly new invention- carracks and old sloops don't look like they could do it. Could viking longboats?

I don't know. But I do know that the first powered hydrofoil was in the very early 20th century. Something like 1908 springs to mind.

Edit: I was close. 1898 apparently. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrofoil#History
