On recent motorway journeys I'm seeing more and more foreign registered HGVs with non matching plates on the tractor and trailer.
Is it legit?
Don’t hold me to this, but I think, at least in Italy, so maybe other European countries too, that the tractor units and trailers are separately registered, ergo the tractor’s plate might be ABC123, but the trailer, quite legally, will be 321BCA.Is it legit?
I guess that as they comply with the regs where truck and trailer are registered, that they’re legal when in U.K.
If an Italian company wants to, it can drop a trailer at Le Havre ferry port, which will be loaded on to a ferry by a Port tractor unit, ferried to Portsmouth, pulled off by a Port tractor, then the trailer will be picked up by a U.K. company, and the driver will put his U.K. plate on the trailer.

Yes, it is. Is it legit?
Germany definitely registers trailers separate to the lorry towing them, I presume other nations do it as well.
In Germany, you don't have to pay tax on your trailer if you agree to let it be used by the military in times of war.

True in Austria and France too I think. In fact I think maybe the UK is the odd one out ? It would be a bit of a pain to have to maintain registration on all of our trailers, mind you - surprised the DVLA haven't latched on to a money-spinner there.Germany definitely registers trailers separate to the lorry towing them, I presume other nations do it as well.

To a point they have. Now any commercial trailor going into Europe from the U.K. Has to have its own plate and a sort of V5. Over 3.5 ton I think. My French trailors all have thier own log books, but no need for a mot. Yet!

I remember vessels being commandeered for the Falklands War, has this happened since, is it just ships or is the government entitled to take whatever it wants at time of war?Germany definitely registers trailers separate to the lorry towing them, I presume other nations do it as well.

STUFT, ships taken up from trade. Don't think it's happened in the UK since the Falklands though.
There's also jointly funded stuff like RORO ferries and the Voyager tanker aircraft where the MoD foots some of the bill but they're used by commercial companies until they're needed. Not sure quite how successful that has been though.
