Why are foreign actors, who presumably have to fake an accent, used in films and TV shows instead of home grown actors?

For instance Robert Taylor , an Australian as an American sheriff in Longmire, or that British bloke with the ginger hair in Homeland. Surely they can't be chosen because no American could play the part as well as they would.
Mel Gibson/Brave Heart = chuckle chuckle

There's definitely learning going on somewhere. I don't have any phobias*; my parents don't have any phobias. My friend has arachnophobia; his mum has as well. Small sample size I know. hehe

  • I don't like the idea of being stranded in the ocean however, only thing that really makes me cold. Don't think it's a phobia though.
I'd say being stranded in the ocean is a rational fear. The chances of it happening are obviously minimal, but it would be rational to be scared should it happen?
It's a funny one - when talking about it it raises a small trickle of dread, when I watch films/telly involving being stranded in ocean it's the same dread-wise along with a measure of nervous excitement which ends as soon the stimulus is removed. Also I'm fine with swimming, boating, being by the sea generally etc.

Yet when I think about it in depth - pun semi-intented - I feel really disconcerted, with a bigger dose of dread and almost listless after a little while. Odd. /therapysession
Listless - stress hormone release. Speaking about depth there are a number of people I know (and I used to be in this category), who are phobic about swimming in the open sea and it's the depth of water beneath that's worrying. What could be swimming round underneath me?

As someone who has swam in the middle of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans I can confirm it is a very unsettling experience.

My calendar and Siri tell me Autumn starts Sept 23rd, why do some papers say summer finishes today 31st August?

The part I always found a bit unsettling when diving was when you couldn't see either the surface or the bottom and were just suspended in an unknown amount of ocean.

I quite liked that. I think because I could see around me quite easily. Under, above and, if the visibility was good, for quite a distance. Swimming on the surface on the open sea, or even sometimes snorkelling on a reef, was quite different and I used to get the heebie-jeebies.

For an even more complicated version - read the wikipedia page for "season"

I presume it’s because of a combination of many factors. The look, the desire to take the part, scheduling and I’m sure many other factors.

Off topic, I really enjoyed Longmire - never thought I would.

What's the deal when you "synch" with someone.

With one of my Exes. If I was thought to send her a WhatsApp message. I'd go onto the app and she'd also be online. (Sometimes about to send me a message too!) But this would be at random times. And its not like we monitored each others schedules to that degree. We both had days that could vary a lot. Though she does use her phone more in a day than I do.

Similarly. Few months ago. Spoke to a young lady on a dating app. But it petered out after a while. We never actually met. But twice this month I've seen her in the street (riding her bicycle in her cycling club kit, which is what caught my eye both times) Both times nowhere near where either of us live. And there's no amount of stalking that could have arranged it THAT perfectly laugh

I shall assume it's not divine intervention. Is it really just dumb chance? Or a case of your brain ignoring the trillion times it didn't happen to focus on the 1 time it did?

That.

You don't notice the billion things that happen which aren't of consequence for you until you think they are. Also being on the phone constantly = always available. Coincidence..

You may get your period at the same time however. (proven to be BS too..)

Specific cultural problem in the US too, of playing the bad guy, which leaks out into real life with viewers unable to keep the distinction in their heads. The brief for Homeland of the co-star role of "a US soldier who converts and becomes a suicide bomber / jihadi back in the US" would have been passed on by a lot of domestic actors.

Whilst I like the Ricky Gervais song, why are they still showing adverts for Freeview? All UK TV is now digital, which means everyone has Freeview as a minimum, surely?

What with the likes of Sony's movie channels about to launch on Freeview, they want you to ditch Sky and watch their adverts service instead. They want you to think that you're not going to be missing much TV content but saving money at the same time.

But as long as you have an aerial, you get Freeview by default, don't you?

I similarly used to notice the same woman on my commute every few days because she had one leg longer than the other and thus an unusual gait. In reality, it's highly likely that you've seen most of the people on your commute multiple times, they just aren't very memorable.

Commuters are creatures of habit and are borderline robots. They tend to catch the same train, stand at the same spot in order to sit in the same carriage and hope to get their favourite seat or stand in the same place.

You’re probably seeing the same people every single day but because you’re not focused on them or engaging with them, you and your subconscious are ignoring them. Only when you engage with them (Heaven forfend!)or notice something out of the ordinary about them will you subsequently remember them.

Why does one PHer fixate on a young woman in a tight Lycra outfit, yet another stares at a woman who would be a natural in a walking around in circles( single direction) competition?
