My mates take the piss relentlessly calling it a handbag and they are completely right but i just dont care as i love it, i feel like joey in that friends episode. laugh
Can you please explain to me what this does that a bag costing about 30 times less doesn't? I simply cannot fathom spending so much on something like that! I must be missing something!

Backpack all the way - I've been using a Deuter Giga Flat for the last 5 years and it has proved to be fantastic.

All I would ask is that if you are getting on public transport please take it off your back so it doesn't keep hitting people around you when you turn around furious

Isn't it like cars? Fiesta and a Maserati both get you from A-B.

Tumi is nice luggage, my only fear with them is it says "rob me", as any bag worth £1k is probably going to have something nice in it.

Yeah but my point is that the benefits of the Maserati over the Fiesta are obvious, even to someone who knows or cares nothing about cars hehe

You're not missing anything, It does absolutely nothing that a bag costing 30 times less does.

I use one of these, it's been around the world with me full of kit of varying description (clothes or cameras etc) and its still like new, really comfortable and really comfortable to carry! You can get spare clothes, washkit with laptop kit etc all in there with spare space!

I have one of these in all black, I interchange with a leather sachel every so often but the build quality on the timbuk 2 is solid.

there's an interesting analogy here with cars -- except, in this case, you provide the motive force and you must suffer the consequence of things like excess mass, off-centre mass, etc.

some very good backpack suggestions in this thread

my advice: go slim and small

choose one that, at first glance, appears to be slightly smaller than you think you'll need

beware: the market is teeming with bags and packs that try to be all things to all people (and end up bulky, lacking in visual appeal, and with noisy and clinking zipper pulls)

WHY A BACKPACK

I adore a smart briefcase, leather portfolio, and the like, and used them for many years.

I went backpack because a briefcase couldn't deliver when shifting from work environment to after hours. Also, many briefcases do not "seal" closed in full. They have a flap. A backpack is more mobile and with higher utility.

A slim backpack disappears when I'm viewed from head on.

As another chap here said, I throw it over one shoulder. The engineering of the pre-formed strap means that the pack stays on my back on its own -- my arms and hands are free.

I've been using a Wenger 600629 COBALT for four years of solid use now and it hasn't yet fallen apart. Its got plenty of space and compartments for and the straps are comfy to cart it around when its loaded with gear.

This is ideal for my role in networking and I wouldn't say I've particularly treated it with care.

Bump!

The zip on my Osprey London bag has started to come away from the bag. So rather than spend £50 getting it repaired I might just treat myself to a new bag as I've had the Osprey for 5 years I think.

Can anyone recommend a nice, leather laptop/messenger bag? Ideally with a section inside for a laptop (Macbook Air M1 - 12 inches I think).

Thanks

I was going to suggest a Paul Smith convertible bag - looks like a laptop bag but converts to a backpack too - I didn't see one on their site, but my carry on bag from Briggs & Riley has been fantastic for 5 years and they repair/replace broken parts with a lifetime warranty.

It's not cheap, but this would be a great option:

Pre Covid I traveled a lot for work and have one of these backpacks https://www.amazon.co.uk/Antler-Bridgford-Backpack... Its great, lots of space inside and has a strap to go over the handle of a drag along case so you don't have to wear it on shoulders if you are away for a few days.

I use Sandqvist bags for work. Very happy with them.

My current one is a Sandqvist Tyre:

https://www.urbanrider.co.uk/sandqvist-tyre-backpa...

It’s not expensive, and it isn’t as attractive as a fancy leather one, but it’s very practical, well made, light, and versatile. Can be carried like a briefcase using the handles, unzip the rear compartment and pull out backpack straps, or use it like a messenger bag.

Very well arranged zips and internal pockets. Fits a 13-14” laptop just fine.
