Cheeky but realistic low offers on houses / cars

I was renting a lovely house in Surrey for £1375pm but had to move out in January.
The owner gave it a fresh coat of paint and stuck it back on the market for £1395pm.
7 months later it's still for let.
Tempted to move back and offer £1200.
Bit daft isn't it. I was a good tenant and was there for 2 years. If he had dropped the price I would have seriously considered staying.
So far he's £9625 out of pocket.

So he forced you out to put the rent up by £20 a month? Hardly a scalping...The owner gave it a fresh coat of paint and stuck it back on the market for £1395pm.

Not the reason I left??The then current rent was too much due to downturn in work.
Had he forced me out due to a £20 scalping as you call it, more fool him.
Nearly £10k down and counting.
Odd as it's a lovely place and there was a queue of people wanting it 2 years ago hence why I bid a bit more.

OTOH, we've had several instances in our family (not us, fortunately) of buyers putting in low ball offers, then upping them to the bare minimum acceptable, then chipping them away again with a thousand here and a thousand there "oh, the survey says this..." , "our solicitor says that...." etc until they're back to the first, rejected offer.My take would be a little different if they tried it on me... the price required would be going up the same amount with each "problem" found
So while there may be decent buyers out there, I would close it all down at the first hint of messing once the offer is agreed if they were the type to have tried starting super low.

I negotiate large deals for a living. When selling cars/houses it is amazing how many people come up with some strategy they have probably read on the internet or some bloke down the pub suggested. Really is first form stuff. This is not the "what's your lowest price mate" muppets.

It matters not how much you knocked off the asking price. ALL that matters is what you paid and what you got for it.
In simple terms, better to buy a car at £18,000 asking price than an identical car at £20,000 that you managed to knock a grand off.

When selling a few years ago, I instructed the estate agent not to accept any offer less than £130k on a property I was disposing of.I had numerous phone calls from them with “ serious “ offers , the lowest being £95k , I told them not to bother wasting my and their time but apparently they’ve got to instruct the seller of all offers.

It doesn’t bother me if someone offers me far less than what I want. I just advise them that I won’t accept that offer. It leaves both sides open to striking a deal.
They want to pay as little as possible, you want to get as much as possible. They are interested in what you’re selling, you’re interested in getting their money. Those are the ingredients for making a deal

ETA: the only time I’ve ditched a potential buyer was when selling my old Vectra on Gumtree. I got a text with an offer around a third of what I wanted (it was well priced already)

By lunch time I had had a guy agree to see it the next day who bought it for the asking price. I didn’t ditch the first one because of the price, but because he was clearly a wker
Gumtree brings these people out in their droves. Pisses me off....... They want to pay as little as possible, you want to get as much as possible. They are interested in what you’re selling, you’re interested in getting their money. Those are the ingredients for making a deal

It's knowing that the person making such an offer will be the type most likely to chip away throughout the whole process. A roof tile here, a white goods there and suspected damp patch to finish. I bought a little terraced house for £75k a few years ago that was up for £110k. No way did I think they’d accept, but hey, lucky me! Aside from this, I haven’t got anything particularly cheap.
Actually, when I bought my Mégane R26.R, I think the list price was something like £27k with the spec I had, but I actually paid £23.5k due to shopping around dealers.

The first house i bought was up for sale for 125k. Very little advertising of it and was in an area of very little foot traffic.Over the space of 3 months i made numerous offers, each one less than the one previously agreed.
I offered 115k. They accepted so i then offered 100k. They refused. A few weeks later when they hadnt had any other offers come in they agreed to the 100k, so i then offered them 90k. Fast forward a few weeks and same scenario so i then offered 80k
Long story short but i ended up getting it for 80k.
Numerous times i could see the estate agent on the verge of telling me to fk off every time i changed my offer but i knew the sellers wanted to get rid of the house as soon as possible and with them not having any other offers the metaphorical ball was in my court.
