It is a precaution in case you fall ill / a serious issue comes up in your country of citizenship.

I’m presuming you have a full British passport and not a travel document or something similar? (Not actually confirmed reading the thread)

You need a valid travel document which satisfactorily establishes your nationality and identity. Your British passport does this providing you complete your journey by midnight on the day it expires.

When travelling abroad some countries require at least 6 months’ passport validity. The UK, for example, doesn’t and purely requires the travel document to be valid for the length of the trip. In your case that is largely irrelevant as you are, I think, a Brit Citizen returning home. You need to confirm that the Bulgarians will accept you but you appear to have done this through TC.

You should be fine even if your return trip is delayed, say, overnight. If it is, All the airline will have to do is call the UK port of arrival to let you travel.

Bearing in mind you’re travelling within the EU and the document is valid you should be fine.

They can, surely, opt not to carry you though? They’re not restricting your freedom of movement - they’re not offering you a service.

They can but only if your document is not valid for travel or they believe you to not be the rightful holder.

What you should do is get your passport renewed 6 months before expiry— don’t think that you’ve lost 6 months no the expiry of the new passport will be 10 years from he expiry of he old one.

Thankyou for the concise answer by the way. smile
The other bit is trusting what people say online as gospel - clearly you will check formally with the authorities and get it in writing from them over username xyz said it was ok

But get it changed before you go you’ve still plenty of time to do it. Ball ache yep but hard luck on that

Nine months, but yes in hindsight I should have got it done. I don't have time now but it sounds like it wont be a problem. Worst that happens is I drive down to Sofia to get a temporary travel card things.

I don't have time to get a new one now. No way I can make it to Portsmouth (the nearest office) before I leave.

No country within the European union requires a UK citizen to have 6 months left on their passport.

You'll be fine. Refer them to username xyz in the event of any difficulty.

Primarily Yambol but we always travel around a bit while we're there. Going and spending a long weekend or a week around Sofia area would be something to break the monotony if it turns out to be necessary.

I've never been karting in Bulgaria at all; are their kart tracks any smoother than their roads? biggrin

Me, for one. For a start our entrenched state bureaucracy wouldn't allow them to be just offered. Then there's the question of how much information is stored and how secure it is. Having dealt with some of the nasty, do anything for a quick quid, young, only just above minimum wage tossers at my local council and various job centres over the years I shudder at the thought of ID cards in this country.

Presumably you don't have a passport? Because I can't imagine what extra information they'd need about you for an ID card that they don't already have for a passport.
