Went to see "The Meg" on Sunday night at the local Showcase with a couple of friends, it was the 8pm showing and there were only around 10 people in with us right up until the adverts stopped, the lights dimmed and the film began to start. At that point two blokes wandered in chatting away with 4 kids under the age of 5 and a baby in a carry seat thing. Phone torches were deployed as they looked for their seats and loudly counted along the row until they got to the one they wanted. The kids then proceeded to talk, run around, cry and scream at various points in the film.

Give it was The Meg I was watching and they were at the front while we were near the back this didn't really ruin the film but I really can't understand the mentality of someone who brings 5 very young kids to the cinema to see a film about a massive shark that eats people and leaves dismembered limbs floating around on screen. It's not a horror by a long stretch of the imagination but it's designed to be full of peril and have the usual Hollywood "jump scares" to add drama.

It's a 12A so apparently perfectly OK for a responsible adult to deem it suitable for their kids, unfortunately it also allows terrible adults to also make the same decision.

Combine this with the usual array of tiny-bladdered toilet wanderers and noisy eaters and it was the usual fun cinema experience.

The thing is it's not limited to cinemas, the majority of the general public just seem to be completely oblivious to how their behaviour might impact others in any given situation. Lane hoggers, noisy neighbours... essentially people are just selfish and need to be killed to restore the happy balance.

Took my daughters to see The Darkest Minds last week. The film is aimed at a teen audience but I quickly became aware I had some middle aged bloke on his own sat behind me surrounded by bags of food, continuously clearing his throat and slurping his drink. Stuck it for 10 minutes and then moved.shoot

I have that 'thing' (think it's called Misophonia) where the sound of people chewing or slurping is like nails being pulled down a blackboard.

Therefore if I'm sitting in a cinema and can hear those sounds it ruins the film for me.

I would pay a lot more to watch a film with no drinks or food allowed in.

That’s one (of many) reasons I won’t go for dinner with my dad

Cinemas are great for kids and first dates etc - but as an adult I'm more than happy to sit at home in the comfort of my OLED TV and 5.1 sound system.
3D was a passing fad that made sense to view in a Cinema, but not sure what they can offer V's a decent home system these days?
nachos with hot cheese sauce
mmmmmmmmmmm
none of the home based variants are as good as Odeon chemical cheese!
This! We have tried, oh how we have tried to have movie night at home with our own cheese dip but it just is the wrong dip, I have made my own which got close but not as satisfying, if anyone stumbles on something similar please let me know smile

I haven't been to the pictures for 30 years. If the stories on this thread are indicative of the experience I'm very glad I haven't bothered.

There's a reason we choose to live in small groups with people we (generally) quite like in houses, not in big rooms with 100 awful, awful strangers.

I barely go cinema thesedays, what i don't get is people who still walk out of a Marvel movie once the credits roll, they've been at it for well over a decade that their is always an extra scene at the end... so why get up and leave?

A lot of the stories here seem to concern the miscreant young.

The last film we went to the cinema to see was Dunkirk. At 48 and 50, my wife and me were the youngest in the audience and surrounded by the clearly audible murmurings of the elderly extolling the accuracy and / or lack of at every bloody scene. Lots of 'tutting' too!

Would have been good if you had called his bluff and asked him to call the police. I'd like to think that the police would see sense and would side with you.
They shouldn't "side with" anyone. He committed assault and could have been arrested or and charged with same. They had not committed any offence.

NB. I agree wholeheartedly with his actions, but had the police been called they would have had to deal with the actual circumstances.

I'll buck the trend here and say that I've never had a really bad experience.

Some chat every now and again but nothing the film doesn't drown out.

Much prefer the bigger screen and some films are better to watch with others.

Use a combination of Everyman and showcase cinema de lux

Well, my mate was a Policeman at the time, relatively new to the role, slightly over-zealous, 6ft 7in tall and had his Metro Police issue .357 on him (SAPS had 9mm's but City had revolvers back then). He had been slouching but now stood up, displayed his badge, put his hand on the butt of his firearm and with gritted teeth, told the nice chaps behind us to find other seats "Now!" biggrin
Did 'voetsek' enter into the conversation wink
Someone I knew in SA called his dog that.

Had fun calling it . biggrin

I wouldn't go to a Vue/Odean/mall-cinema for exactly this reason. However I'm lucky to have a few smaller places not far from me (The Electric Cinemas in either Portobello or Shoreditch) and the clientele is a bit more well behaved - but you pay for it. Worth it IMO; but then film and cinema is a bit of a passion of mine.

I went to watch ant man and the wasp on Sunday with the good lady wife. When the credits rolled she ushered me up/ Out the Place. Turns out she had already read about the final bonus scene and told me what it was all about to save us waiting.

Many many people must spoil it for themselves before they even go in
