A couple of reasons:

1: The 850hpa (roughly 1,500 above sea level) temperature isn’t cold enough to freeze the moisture

2: The dew point is too high.

This is indicative of the warmer weather that’s moving in.

Thanks. Interesting. It’s warmed up here now to just about 0. It’s been -2 to -3 most of the day. Still raining ice. It’s grim and I’ve got to go out at 7.30 and my car looks like Lemmy’s above. In fact I can’t see the car because the house windows are like milk bottle bottoms. Never known anything like it! nuts

Would gritters have much effect with this freezing rain ?.....just get washed away almost instantly.

I remember the freezing ice that hit Hampshire in the late 90s. We got home just before. Neighbours got in 30mins later and couldn’t get the car to their house. Driver got out and fell on his arse. So he got the car mats out and used them as stepping stones to ferry him, his wife and 2 kids, moving the one he had just stepped off to the front until he got to his house.

However, his boxer dog faired not quite so well. He hopped out of the hatchback and... well basically it was like watching that scene from Bambi. Not, not “that” one, his mum didn’t get shot, I mean the one on the frozen pond with the rabbit!

Still horrid rain and wind here.
We had some last year, typically when I was away and had taken anything useful like the Disco on winters and my crampons. hehe

My wife got stuck trying to get the kids home, so got a lift with the local farmer. Then couldn't get out to work the next day, but thought she'd check on our 90 year old neighbours.

She found him stuck half way across his sloping drive in his vest, using a broom to stay upright, as he'd popped out to his garage for some food. He was basically in tears and unable to move.

She pretty much saved his life. eek

I doubt it. It's like when it snows. People moan about the lack of gritters. All of the rain we are having will just wash it all away.

A more simple way to consider freezing rain...

It starts up high as snow, falls through a warm sector and melts. Then near the ground it meets colder air again and the rain turns to ice.

Rare here, very rare.

I’ve been out and the roads are ok but there are lots of branches down as the weight of the ice has done for them. We’ve a conifer in the garden that’s leaning. It’s got tennis ball sizes lumps of ice stuck to it. Never seen ice like this before.

We haz no snow up here, only a half-arsed ice rain 'event'. That's the best we can do for now frown . If Rick doesn't have snow up in Queensbury then nowhere else in the UK will have any.

No snow. But the ice was indeed “baked on”. This was after 45 minutes or so of driving. Every so often a bit would drop off and clatter under the car. Most disconcerting.

It’s now 3 degrees and pissing it down. The ice has gone!

Very complex setup at the moment, with no clear direction on where we're heading. The form horse for Xmas Day is currently crisp cold high pressure, with a small possibility of snow showers for NE coastal areas.

Real snowy cold weather isn't a million miles from the setup - but not currently forecast! What I'm saying is it's not off the table, but it is unlikely.

Following Xmas, that real snowy cold weather could start to materialise. But again, not currently forecast, just a possible outcome from where the setup is.
