I have a Fjallraven Greenland Winter Jacket (Teddy lining, not down).

It’s definitely not too warm. Still need a sweatshirt and t-shirt for walking in sub 10c, so it’s ideal for me.

Still £300 which feels a lot.

This is what I was looking at.

https://www.musto.com/en_GB/corsica-jacket-2.0/820...

But can't see in person and can't work out whether it's a bit Roy Cropper hehe

It depends, I think, what you look like.

This probably looks good in a sort of not making a statement kind of way: https://www.musto.com/en_GB/marina-field-jacket/82...

Not clear why it has had a mediocre review. Could easily be "Ad didn't say that it didn't have a [insert random feature here]"

I did look at that but thought it was mesh lined which I assumed meant no insulation.

But another read and it mentions primaloft confused

I have just purchased a new winter coat. Most of my coats were technical goretex jackets from Arcteryx or Patagonia. This time I have gone for the Fjalraven smock no 1. Its hasnt got a fancy waterproof membrane so I need to wax it.
First impressions are good. The sizing is waaaay off, I’m a solid medium in everything, I had to take a xs in this jacket.

I've never had a "proper" winter coat since I was a child, but I now have a dog, which means going out in all weather (and it's been particularly cold/wet here in Edinburgh recently). I tried on a few, before buying a North Face Carto 3-1 Triclimate. North Face had it for sale for £230, but saw it online for £178 (with a sign up discount of 10%) - top marks to Griggs, I ordered it yesterday morning, and it was scheduled for delivery by DPD tomorrow. I received an update and it's just been delivered.

I usually just layer up, with fleeces and a shell. But just ordered this, fortunately the faux fur trim is detachable.

I'll probably reconfigure it to a Davy crocket style.
New jackets arrived.

Feels comfortable, warm, windproof, decent hood and pockets too, zips a little flimsy, but hey its only £50.

Undecided on the detachable dead ferret.

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago;

Very pleased with it - like a modern version of a Barbour, and shrugged off some serious weather the first time I used it.

incredibly well made and versatile. Not my usual thing, but once tried it became a firm fixture.
Ordered a heavyweight merino in mustard yellow.

They look like quality.

Thanks for the link.

Unfortunately, Justayellowbadge passed away recently so he isn't around to receive your thanks.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. I didn't know him but that's a shame. I'm still grateful for his good taste in shirts though. RIP.

Lightweight quilted outdoor walking jackets. Any recommendations?

I have just broken the zip on my worn-out quilted Rab jacket, and need to replace it.

I use these type of jackets for lots of stuff: Walking, dog walking, inspections on job sites, general outdoor cold weather tasks, walking to the pub..

My last two cost around £150 each and I have trashed both of them in a couple of years, so any recommendations that are less than that would be very welcome. There doesn't seem to be much point in spending hundreds on something that clearly won't last for years due to usage.

Looking for something that is thin, warm, light, soft/comfortable, and bonus points for shower resistant.

Thanks!

Good suggestion.

The price is right as well.

I bought one of these a while ago to have in place of my usual Rab one just to wear under a waterproof, but it turned out to be a really good jacket even though it only cost £40

I love my Uniqlo down jackets for around town on cold dry days, but wouldn't buy one for walking. No real water resistance at all, and the outer material is very thin and rippable on thorns etc.

They are cracking mid-layers and cheap as chips as long as you buy the colours less popular smile

WTF are you doing with the jackets to bin them in a couple of years?!

My oldest Rab Jacket (Microlight alpine jacket) I've had for 6 years, and it's been through a hell of a lot more than what you describe, and still in fantastic condition - it's been bounced about on pub crawls and scraped about on Scottish crags, and everything else in between.

I know climbers who are lot harder on their kit than me, and their Rab gear just shrugs it off, inc one mate who's sponsored by Rab, and who really doesn't baby the kit!

I don't disbelieve you, but genuinely surprised at you only getting a couple of years out of that use case.
