I've got an Arcteryx Fission SV. Gore-tex Pro with coreloft insulation. I bought it in 2011 or 2012 for £500. Missus couldn't believe I'd spent that on a jacket.

10 years later, I still wear it for around 6 months every year. So warm I rarely wear anything except a t-shirt underneath. Looks virtually as good as new, just starting to show a little wear around the cuffs.

Not sure if the quality is still the same. I know that jacket no longer has the Pro fabric. I've bought a couple more summer jackets (softshell & hardshell) since and they seem to be holding up well too.
+1 for Arc'teryx from me.

I have Atom LT in both hoody and vest.

Next purchase is going to be a Beta SV.

Bloody zip broke on my nice Rab jacket the other day. I now have a paperclip to do it up with hehe
If it is just the puller, then a knotted piece of paracord or dark nylon string/shoe lace might be better.
Note Rab also have a pretty good repairs service that's pretty reasonable.
It's the clip bit that holds the puller on and would be the bit that you'd put the paracord through that's broken, leaving just the bracket that holds the clip, with a tiny hole just big enough for a paperclip.

Wasn't aware Rab had a decent repair service, but I might need to wait until spring before using it.

I've got a nice Canada goose parka coat, the one with the removable fur hood. Very warm even on the coldest day, can only ever wear a t-shirt underneath. I don't wear it often as it's not usually cold enough and isn't waterproof. Nowadays I don't like their image, if it wasn't so expensive I'd unstitch the badges but I don't want to risk ruining it.

I bought a Zeta AR shell, 3 years ago and wear it over a Rab microlight most of the time. Each year, I've washed it with the NikWax techwash and wash-in repellent and it's still like new. Cuffs are usually the first thing to go on a jacket for me and there's no sign of wear at all. Pricey but great quality.

A small keyring will do the job really well if you can thread it through the hole in the slider body

I just went into town in the "forgotten" jacket.

Only a tee shirt underneath.

How the utter fk do people go around wearing proper winter jackets?

I'm a skinny fker and I think I've lost about half a pound hehe

I've just bought a didriksons drew 5 parka and very impressed with it, very warm, very waterproof and a few nice features like holes for your thumbs in the cuff and an oversized hood for a bit of sea fishing brand heritage smile

Fashion jackets, which your Hilfiger jacket is, generally don't have the breathable properties that more technical jackets do.

For example, I have a puffa jacket from H&M, purely because I like how it looks, but unless it's properly cold, I sweat like a hoor in it.
Whereas if I wear any of my Rab, Montane or North Face down / synthetic jackets (which are much higher performing jackets) in the same circumstances, I'm fine.

This is nice. Where are these made? Been looking at the Canada Goose ones and like the fact they're actually made in Canada (or at least some are). Pay for the privilege, of course, but I'd imagine this North Face one isn't cheap either.
No idea where they are made. €470

That makes sense does make me wonder though just what is suitable for the UK.

Suspect I'll get by now just bloody embarrassing to have forgotten I had it!

I bought my main winter coat for £8 about 5 years ago in a Jan sale at TK Maxx.

I've had a number of people tell me without prompting that they like it and I still like the look of it myself. Plus it's fairly warm.

Not very PH I know so if it helps then add a couple of zeros to the price and imagine I buy one every year instead.
I love a good tk Maxx bargain hehe if they had a large in or any other stores did within an hours drive then I'd have had a carhartt parka for £125 the other month, was gutted it was a right piece of kit frown

If you have a ultra warm coat that goes down to low temps, and is also waterproof, then it won't be breathable - doesn't matter if fashion or texhnical. These coats are not designed for any activity aside from standing around or walking at a normal pace.

None of my down jackets are waterproof.

Actually, that's not true, my McMurdo is fairly waterproof.

Also, my Rab Alpine jacket is designed with movement in mind.

I had one of these years ago and sold it on as it was just too warm for British winters.

Arcteryx is very expensive IMO and I can't see the reason (And I have one of their fleeces, bought in a rush.)
They make some really nice stuff, and when I was after a gore-tex shell some back I was tempted by one of theirs, but it was nearly twice as much as the Patagonia I bought instead
I prefer Patagonia for (ski) gear as well. Never really understood why people buy Arcteryx unless for the name as the tech is replicated in much cheaper stuff for half the price. Arcteryx stuff does look good though and for some that's enough to justify the cost I guess

Apple vs High end androids. Both good products but one is more desirable as a brand.

Yeah I get that, but it's just another example of people paying over the odds because of (self) perceived quality simply because of a higher price tag. Maybe an element of badge snobbery. The thing is though that some Arcteryx stuff isn't just more expensive, it's ruinously expensive for what it is. Clearly it works for them though.
