At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a church bell would ring and everybody in the street would stand absolutely still. Buses would stop. The whole city came to a standstill. This is Norwich in the 1950s. I was too young to understand, but we all did it, just the same.

Respect. Properly observed.

I'm only a lad, nowhere near as old as many (most) of you on here, however I can still recall the utter wonder of being given one of the new 20 pence pieces, when they were introduced. You could buy a lot of sweets with 20p.
I'm old enough to remember Farthings, Thrupenny bits, and half crowns. I remember when the half crown was withdrawn from circulation and my "rich" auntie gave us all one to keep for posterity. It was the most money I'd seen in my short life thus far(12.5p in modern money) and was unfortunately spent at the sweetie shop before the day was out.

the Betamax - VHS format war
Wasn't there another format at one time, V2000?
I only vague remember that one, I do remember introduction of the first laser video discs but it was far to expense for everybody and could not record.

The best kids games didn't need electronics, but the first few were just flashing lights and buzzers, Operation & Simon come to mind. Then the Atari Console appeared when I was early teens and was quite literally a game changer.

........there were only two TV channels to choose from.

What are you old enough to remember?
When there was one!
When there was none!
You’re older than 82?
I can also remember when the TV (it was always called Tee Vee) was shut down during the war, Rodney.

You had a playground?
Newfangled to you, perhaps, Eric. I'm not old enough to remember going straight down the pit at four years old. By the time I was around, we had to cram in a few years learnin' between the teat and the toil. And they even shoved us outside to burn off some energy twice a day.

As kids you addressed adults as Mister or Mrs, otherwise word got home you'd been disrespectful.

Playing cops & robbers or cowboys & indians, making a bow and arrow with string and a stick.

You got me there, I remember them going from the curvey fronted Bedfords to flat fronted ones, but not the horse and cart.

Sugar Puffs ads before they featured the Honey Monster.

When the Post Office Tower was the tallest building in the country.

When these were being used to advertise Outspan Oranges. (Possibly just the one, and possibly only where I went to school.)

Not quite, but I do remember them being relaunched in the ‘70s. (Possibly an early example of using retro cool to appeal to hipsters?)

.....my dad was shocked as fuel went over 30p a gallon and he decided that a used MkX Jag was not a viable car as it would cost more than £6 to fill its twin tanks and you'd struggle to get 250 miles out of it which was roughly a weeks commute for him.

He bought a brand new Mk3 Cortina 1600XL instead!
