My MIL is now starting to lack confidence. All we can do is encourage her, monitor, and be ready to help as required.

Sometimes it'd be easier to just take control, but the longer she can deal with day to day activity the better.

A common theme seems to be internet banking with the older generation. Both my parents and In-laws refuse to use it. I’ve pointed out that when they go in branch to do something that takes 10 seconds on a phone these days, the clerk is basically using the same interface that they’d be using in the comfort of their home.

I don't know if that was a tongue in cheek comment for people that say that, but I'd like to point out for those that do, it doesnt.

A bank teller will actively try to get someone to use the app instead of coming in. It's a massive headache and drain for them.

Dad, 75, spends every Christmas morning dealing with his ebay account (selling railway memorabilia) Last Christ morning Mum flipped at him - 'Harry, there are people around the world who can't be with their families on Christmas Day, and you're upstairs on bloody ebay. Get. Down. NOW!

He had a moan, then realised he was being a dick, and came downstairs all smiles shortly after.

A bank teller will have been told to do so by management and might well have a target for the numbers he/she has to divert.

And, back to the original point, until the banks properly indemnify people against cyber-fraud, those who refuse to use online banking are probably the sane ones.

If it's a massive headache and drain for them to use what you say is the same app, then it's hardly surprising that infrequent computer users are reluctant to use it!
And yes, I was being serious; if we all use phone apps and ATMs there will obviously be a reduction in the number of counter staff.

I'm not being funny but are you seriously suggesting that the epidemic levels of fraud we are experiencing have actually been at those levels for decades? Or that removing personal interactions (such as a bank clerk dealing with the same customer week in week out - the old fashioned thing of actually knowing your customer) does not introduce significant additional risk, and occurrence, of fraud into financial transactions?

My grandad was doing internet banking about 15 years ago when we were still on dial up, at over 90 years old. Also used to do his stocks and shares online too. Very impressive.

At 85 i check her emails and history to see what old st i will have to return the following week

Merely countering your claim that anyone using online banking was insane due to fraud risk. A kind of insult to 90%+ of the population.

I have to look or walk away when either of my parents try to use the SkyQ control. They cannot change from BBC1 to BBC2 without going via the EPG. “Just press the. Ch+ button Dad...”.
