I read the novel the other day.
Spookily accurate ... have visited BKK a few times and know ppl who have worked there.
have also met several Thai women in the ME .... some similar characteristics to what is in the novel.
Personally I would not date or get involved with a bar girl.( dodgy backgrounds/ broke/ in debt / may be married/ not at all trustworthy)
and middle class Thai women who work in offices / come from educated families won’t be found in those bars.
On another note: an old friend of mine from high school is now on his 4th wife ... met on the internet ... she is from West Africa... hope it works out.

When I compare these guys with my old school mates who married British wives, most are divorced!
On another note, the girls don't get it easy either. Loads of guys promise the earth, fail to deliver and leave them with kids. I know one guy (British) who travels to Thailand on his time off, leaving his African wife and kids at home.

The mention of the Swiss Village in NE Thailand was especially interesting. I suppose for many born into poverty, bar girl work is one of the few ways in order to earn a decent wedge and support your family. Two other points I found interesting: Firstly that the women were expected to go and work to earn money and the men were basically sitting around at home watching TV/getting drunk. Secondly the Thai opinion of westerners as stupid water buffaloes/cash cows. I presume this is mostly isolated to the poor villages and those involved in bar girl work rather than Thai wide?

In fact the book (the private investigator character) makes mention of agencies that can arrange marriages with vetted Thai women and the success rate was very high (stating that Thai women make very good/devoted wives). The issue is with falling in love with the bar girls and expecting it to end happily ever after.
