Gay Byrne (1934-2019)
Although not so well known in the UK, the most famous TV and radio broadcaster in Ireland died today.
Gay Byrne first started broadcasting on Irish national radio in 1957 and moved over to TV when the state broadcaster, RTE, commenced in 1962. He was most famous for hosting the chat show "The Late Late Show" which began in 1962. Although the programme is still running, Byrne retired from "The Late Late" in 1999. He continued on Irish radio up until 2017 when illness prevented him from continuing.
He did spend a few years in the UK, initially as a TV host for Granada TV in Manchester and then for a few years at the newly set up BBC2 (he was appointed by the first director of BBC 2, David Attenborough).
When he was working for Granada, he was the first person to interview a new but not yet well known pop group known as "The Beatles". Byrne is on the left. The other "interviewee" is Ken Dodd.

Yes, I remember him from Granada Reports, with Bill Grundy.Apart from the Beatles, they also featured a young upcoming American folk singer, Paul Simon, before the success of I am a Rock.
And that famous clip with him & Stephen Fry talking about God
