That is really unexpected and sad. I'm just getting into cooking (rather late in life) and I have been looking at some of his books. My late wife was an avid cookbook collector so I have lots of books to look through - including some of his.

Another departure announced today is Dr Jonathan Miller, medical doctor, TV presenter, documentary maker, actor, comedian, theatre producer etc etc. I always remember him from the TV series (and book), "The Body in Question"-

Jamie has retracted his 'Fall' remark.

Gary was filming on Tuesday and was taking a break at his home. Suddenly fell ill and died. Sounds like a heart attack.

Must not get too complacent about life. Brings it home. I had a heart attack at 46. Slim fit etc.

I'm 57 now and only Monday my doc warned me that my cholesterol is up again.

As I said, don't waste your days.

RIP Gary frown

The death of Johnathan Miller has quite affected me. I find it hard to comprehend how a mind like that can suddenly be extinguished. I am not religious, I have no belief in life after death, but how can something like his intelligence and talent so suddenly be lost. frown

Turning into a bad day all round. I loved Clive James - not so much for his TV career but for his writing. He'd been ill for almost a decade.

Radio 4 has an obituary programme on Friday afternoons. That's going to be quite a show this week.

Real shame about Clive James.

Always had a soft spot for him since watching his programmes with my dad when I was a kid.

His clip shows were hilarious. Especially the ones about Endurance, the Japanese "torture" game show.

A clever, witty man.

RIP.

I loved reading and listening to Clive James - one of the few along with Barry Norman and Michael Palin whom you could not help but “hear” as you read their prose.

His cadence, tone and humour came through in his writing as it did in his presenting. A damned fine poet too, against that Aussie image.
Off to find his documentaries - they must be around the internet somewhere... RIP

Clive James was a seriously intelligent man, a great loss.

His ‘Desert Island Discs’ from way back in the 80’s is a great listen if anyone is interested.

OMG, Margarita Pracatan, I'd forgotten about her! Clive James said of Pracatan, "She never lets the words or melody get in her way. She is us, without the fear of failure."
For those who never saw her, her singing was not as good as René's wife in 'Allo, 'Allo.
I can't link from my phone, but her version of 'Always on my Mind' on YouTube will give you an idea of her talents.

Clive James was one of the most interesting blokes to listen to with such a wonderful delivery, must read some of his stuff, mainly remember his tv shows.

Saw him at a one man show at the Lowry in Manchester, we were a bit early and he came in at the same time, in a hurry and dropped all his stuff going in, we helped him pick it up and chatted briefly, very charming and seemingly not as together as his tv persona.
