Probably been mentioned (several times over) but went to a toby carvery the other day, fking hell now that is council x100.
No, if you want proper council go to a Crown Carvery.

Both are part of the Mitchell & Butler group, but Crown Carvery is the cheap version (if you can believe) it of the Toby Carvery, with a carvery meal being 2/3rds the price of Toby at around £5.
I have been dipping in and out of the thread, so apologies if it's been discussed already: where does Hungry Horse sit in the hierarchy. I pass one on my way to work. It is on a country road, next to a couple of garages/truck repair places and a trailer park.
Or "Sizzling Pubs"? We went to one passing through, the council-o-meter was off the scale just in the car park with both a rusty transit tipper and an American style motorhome.

Inside though it was actually alright, separate dining area away from the weirdos and pissheads, the food was reasonable and the staff were pleasant too.

BUT we did have 3 middle aged blokes on the table next to us loudly discussing the merits of their various cars (with the amount of "deeee-suw" in the tank being the main one!) one of which was in sparkly silver high heels...

Check out the p!sser
That must have been a cheap guest house before being converted.

The entire house is depressing.
It's what I would imagine a B+B in Scarfolk (worth checking out if you find bleak/dystopian humour funny) would be like.

As for the urinal, I as thinking of fitting one to the back wall of my garage with the outfall pipe discharging onto the compost heap. I decided just pissing on the compost heap would be less effort. Lazy council I suppose.

Jack's Hill by any chance, near Stevenage (very council)?

i went to a carvery, not a snob, but. Turkey that crumbled, the rest of the meat dry. Sauce pot dripping and stained, plates piled high by the great unwashed, dirty tables, sticky everything, dried food on cutlery, people coughing everywhere, and I imagine as close to a pig trough for humans as possible...

That just sounds horrific. If I wanted to pig out at a buffet I'd rather go to a Chinese where most things are in sauces and not a major problem eating one that was made 30mins ago and kept warm. Or if I wanted a roast, go to a real pub for that.

Toby isn't eat all you want. The meats you only get once.

I don't go often, but the ones I've been to have been decent. They have loads of custom and the food doesn't sit long.

Crown Carvery is a step down. It's cheaper and the quality is worse.

Still when you think what food you get for a few quid it's better than purely eating junk food.

Timing. If you're not queueing up when the first serving of meat comes out, you're too late.

I think that is probably the key.

Personally, I would rather just pay more and have someone make me a proper lunch.

That is always the balancing act.

There is something in a good carvery though. Freshness is always an issue even in the more expensive places.

No fancy food but nice enough & great big portions lick
Some of the tables have TVs showing CBBC etc for the kids , so yes, quite council

Ah the mighty "TV be gone" will soon sort the noisy tv at the table out.

I just looked at the Crown Carveries website and my nearest one is 89 miles away. Is this un-council?

I think that the way it works on PH, is that if you Google Crown Carvery, you’re council.
