As someone that's neither from Glasgow or Edinburgh, but has spent loads of time in both - I actually think Edinburgh is worse. The amount of beggars in Edinburgh is crazy. Yes ok, Glasgow has a few outside of Central, but that's where they seem to be concentrated. Edinburgh is full of people on average wages that would like you to think they're a millionaire; council. Another thing that I observed, people in Glasgow are very friendly. Although it is pretty well known for having the 'Scots-welcoming-attitude.' Edinburgh is far more hostile. People seem to think they're too good to acknowledge anybody else.MikeT66 said:
Anyway, what's the chance of some council fame-desperadoes on Channel 4's forthcoming "Bring Back The Bush", as highlighted by vixen1700 in the TV thread? Hopefully high...

Nah, that'll be full of middle class, jobless hippies who look like they're getting a shoulder ride from Don King.https://www.channel4.com/programmes/bring-back-the...

It is said that you can have more fun at a Glasgow funeral than at an Edinburgh wedding
I've never bought that line. Edinburgh people are perfectly friendly. Chances are as a visitor you won't encounter that many of them. The student/tourist/transient population is high in Edinburgh and ever increasing, sadly. Conversely I've heard from people who moved to Glasgow in later life that it is hard to make friends with the native population there. In part this is because people don't move out of Glasgow so they retain the same social circle that they had in school. Throw in that hyper-compartmentalised attitude (and sectarianism) and you have hard lines drawn on the map. Once a Cranhill man, always a Cranhill man. Throw in an inevitable dollop of "what do you have for dinner on a Friday?" or "what school did you go to? How do you spell it?"
The notion that Glaswegians are somehow funnier or more gregarious as a rule of thumb is the same nonsense that scousers and cockneys peddle. For Glasgow being the 'second city in the empire' or whatever, it was put on the map because it used to manufacture things rather than make decisions. Take away this huge source of employment and you have a horde of embittered folk shambling about. A half-cut, freshly lain off dock worker is going to be anybody's mate down the pub. It is only natural that you then play up to any positive stereotype thrown your direction.
Part of this is that I don't believe that the Glaswegian accent, with its odd sing-song faux Irish cadence, is real. I think Glaswegians talk one way in the home and then play up the accent (ala scousers and cockneys) when out and about in public or handed a microphone. “Izzat a marra on yer barra Clara?”
Saying that, the Edinburgh accent (especially that from North of Ferry Road) is horrible. "Jist poaped out fur a boatle eh juice, ken eh? Saw that boy fae the high flats, ken wee Jeemy? Told the lassie in the shope tae keep the chinge, ken!".

However, why are some people labelled British and others Scottish? Tim Henman was always 'British', Andy Murray is always 'Scottish'. Even Wikipedia says Lewis Hamilton is British and yet David Coulthard is Scottish.
If DC had won a championship he'd have been promoted to British. Andy Murray is often labelled as British, though this would likely not have been the case had he not reached the heights that he has.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Murray

He's not ventured into an Edinburgh scheme or industrial estate for a while. Holed up in his wee middle class bubble, without a clue.

I've heard of such places. Apparently they are where all the stolen motorbikes turn up? Why would I ever want to set foot in any of them? Sue me for having some aspirations and goals and wanting to live in comfort, frankly. 'Middle class bubble' is the language of envy, and rife for derision in a Council thread. Just stick "University of Life" as your 'Education' and be done with it.
