My understanding of the 50ps being worth 30k is someone puts it on eBay, someone bids a mad amount as a joke / mistake and it all gets out of context quickly

I like digging up old coins. Found a silver halfpenny the other day that bore the image of Edward I ‘Longshanks’. Dropped by someone in the 1200’s.
Oooh, nice. smile

I don't collect coins, but would love to see a pic of that.

Isn't that a penny rather than a half penny?

I have a half penny from a similar era - back in the day when you simply cut a penny in half to get your half penny!

But this is my favourite old coin - a 1640 Charles 1st 40 pence piece.

380 or so years in the soil did not seem to do too much damage.

Holy thread bump…

So I was gifted a box of coins many years ago and happened to find them earlier, and it got me wondering what, if anything, they might be worth.

I believe the one with the most potential value is this 1847 coin, which I have deduced is a Queen Victoria Young Head Silver Crown.

It has some visible lettering on the edging (DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI XI) and weighs 28g (kitchen scales!).

Values seem to differ wildly online so if PH has any coin buffs I’d be grateful of any helpful input!

If it is a genuine coin (a LOT of fakes out there) then it will be 925 sterling silver, scarp value around £15-20 but as a collectible coin anywhere between £100-200 depending on condition, shame it isn't the gold version wink

It is great bait for the likes of Reach PLC who can pop it on 100 sites eg. (no links, as thats what they want)

"One of your old 50p coins could be worth £410"

"Rare 50p coin could be worth £1500 - how to check if you..."

"Rare 50p coin sells for £140 - and there are thousands"

"Brexit 50p coin sells for £10000 - and there are millions "

"People urged to check their 50ps as rare coin sells for £2500"

etc etc

It then gets shared on socials, lots of engagement of people commenting or tagging in mates to check... not news, not useful for people, and not true. Just ad £ for an increasingly desperate PLC.

Reach PLC shareprice -31.15 over last year. They should be hunting 50 pence pieces!

Thanks Saleen.

It weighs what it should do, so hopefully it’s legit. Is it worth cleaning up to sell or do collectors prefer coins as they are?

Could paint it gold… biggrin

DO NOT CLEAN

100 to 200 is about there, possibly a bit more

see https://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/index.htm... or https://www.allcoinvalues.com/

It's a young head crown.

As said, do not clean it, having the coin graded will see a better return but you have to weigh up the outlay v return on doing so

There are 10 50p that are as rare as Hens teeth

In 2019 the Mint issued these to commemorate 50 years of the 50p and are reissues of various 50p but with the 2019 date
Now if a Kew Gardens 50p goes for silly money and there are 210k minted. The average mint runs of these is 32k per coin. ..Yet they seem to have gone under the radar and some have been sold on ebay for 15-20.00

I m holding on to my remaining three just in case someone finds out just how rare these are

When i sold the other 7 i didnt realise just how low the mint run was!!!
